Just so you know, you can also just mention someone by typing @ followed by their nickname and a facebook like tagging thing comes up.

 

As for the problem, I have seen it in the past, and it happens especially when the resolution automatically switches on you due to network bandwidth. Try setting it at a resolution (the gear icon) instead of leaving it on auto.
