So, a friend suggested this forum to get no-nonsense advice about which card to go with when switching from nvidia to ati.

I currently have a gtx570HD card and I want to get something fairly new around the 300$ price range.  I mainly play civilization 5, battlefield 4, and do work in photoshop, so i need something that can handle a good amount of work.

I was looking at GIGABYTE GV-R928XOC-3GD Radeon R9 280X 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 but I'm not sure about it.  The only one that I've used was XFX and their customer support was so awful that lets just say they will never get a recommendation from me.

So thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Thanks

Get it. You can run both games on Ultra, especially when Mantle Drivers come out.

I recommend the Sapphire R9 280X Toxic Edition, really powerfull card and it also looks just beautiful, and it only costs 299€ here in France, it's probably the same in dollars where you live.

You might want to consider the MSI TwinFrozr 280X, I've heard it has a little better cooling than the Windforce but you can't go wrong with either of them as they both has superb cooling.

Solid choice with that gigabyte 280x, i also HIGHLY recommend the DC2 Platinum edition. Theres nothing wrong with radeon cards at all, hell I'M switching over to the 290x when non reference models hit shelves within the next few weeks. Mainly because BF4 is the game i play the most and mantle is said to work wonders.

so random weird question then.  By switching to AMD/ATI/Whatever you call it now a days, could you use an Nvidia card for Physx or is that just wishful thinking?

You can with hacked drivers. They'll likely be super old drivers, but it's still possible.
