My first build and I already screwed up. Please help.

Clunker

I'm doing my first build and it's not going well. First my motherboard didn't exactly line up with one standoff. So there's only one screw holding the top of my motherboard in. It seems pretty secure with the other five screws so I don't know if leaving that one empty matters. It's the standoff directly behind the top of the I/O shield.

But here's where I really screwed up. I was putting on the stock cooler and I got a wire caught under the heatsink. I had to pull the fan back off the chip to get the wire out. I don't think I pulled it all the way off, maybe I did. I guess I did. So now I'm thinking my thermal paste is f***ed up with air holes or whatever.

I don't know if it's not going to matter or if I have to start over. It's not like I have thermal paste laying around. This sucks.

Maybe go a little slower and be a little more careful going forward.

Time to go down to the store and buy a tube of thermal compound.

My first build took over 2 hours, even though I watched literally over 10 full build guides back in 2010. I knew what I was doing thanks to the research, but I didn't want to rush and fuck up. Take it easy and think every step through.

That's great. Does anyone want to weigh in with something constructive? It's not like I'm not on edge or anything. So everyone thinks I'm absolutely going to have to order some thermal paste replacement kit or something?

^This is the best advice you can get.

Everything on a computer should click and align in place at the first try. If it doesn't it's because something you're doing is wrong. Take the time and and double-check if needed. Don't rush nor try to muscle in anything. This doesn't apply to molex and some pci-e cables, tho.

Anyway, if one stand-off isn't properly aligned it means it may be in direct contact with the PCB which is bad since it can cause a short. Take the mobo out and try to align it properly. I'm betting your I/O shield isn't properly fitted in.

As for the cpu, buy a thermal paste tube and clean the heatsink and cpu thoroughly with alcohol.

You obviously need to reseat the mobo, as the case and motherboard follow the same standard, they shouldnt differ. And yes, you definitely need some new thermal paste. Or you can use toothpaste as a temporary replacement.

You don't need to replace thermal paste every time. I mean, my 290 is fine with it :P And so is my 4790.

What does that mean? What do you mean that you don't need to change the thermal paste every time?

I disassemble my 290 about twice a week. Half the time, I don't change my thermal paste, and my temps stay the same.

OK, here's a question....

I bought enough stuff to build two computers. I bought two i5s. So if I take that i5 out, how can I store it until the thermal paste kit gets here? I mean, I don't want to put it back in the box with thermal paste on it. Right?

It's fine to do that, but why did you buy 2 of everything in the first place?

To build two computers. One is for me, the other is for my parents.

Oh, I fixed the motherboard standoff. This I/O shield sucks ass. It's the Asus motherboard with these little prongs sticking out that apply pressure. The MSI board that I bought doesn't have those. I manged to keep bending prongs till I got everything lined up. I also replaced that standoff because I thought it might be threaded crooked or something. But whatever, I got that part fixed.

Now, I'm just worried about the thermal paste and the chip.
