Alright, while watching some old minecraft videos with gtx 970s, I notice that they are getting better frame rates and higher setting in minecraft shaders than my gtx 1070.

My problem is I'm running the game at standard settings but I average around 120 fps and 12 chunks rendered. I turn the render distance up to 16 chunks and I drop down to 80 fps at 1080p.

With a sorta high end system like mine I would expect to have most of these settings cranked to the max but I can't. Yet someone with a gtx 970 and i7 4790k gets way better fps. I don't know if anyone else has this issue or it's just me or minecraft mods run like crap. I am running Sildurs vibrant shaders extreme and vatics faithful texture pack.

PC specs:

Core i5 6600k oced to 4.2 Ghz

MSI GTX 1070 armor oc edition

16gb of Corsair vengeance lpx ddr4 ram @ 2666 Mhz

Asus Z170-A motherboard

Cooler master hyper d92

250gb Samsung 940 evo ssd

1tb WD blue hard drive

EVGA supernova 550W g2 power supply

How much ram do you have allocated to the game? If you're just using the default amount you're probably going to want to bump it up quite a bit when using shaders and hi res texture packs.

I allocated 10gb.

If you're getting lag spikes I would recommend lowering the RAM allocation to like 4gb. When the jvm does garbage collection it can cause your framerate to spike if using the default GC. If you do want to keep the value high then I think you can put this in your launch options:  -XX:+UseG1GC . The game will then use a garbage collector that is designed to support heaps > 4gb.

If you aren't getting lag spikes then don't worry what I've just said, there is something else impacting performance.

It's probably that Minecraft mods run like crap.  As much as mods are great, a lot of them are written sloppily. xD

I honestly don't get it. I don't know if it's minecraft or my pc. I have fallout 4 using the recommended settings in GeForce experience and it runs just fine. Guild wars 2 with its outdated API runs fine 60 fps with max settings. I feel like it's a hit-and-miss with minecraft.

I don't have many lag spikes, only when I turn the chunks up to 16 the fps goes down very slowly.
