I thought about going all USB on the capture cards. I have a INOGENI here that works perfectly, but... if I'm building a PC from scratch, I feel like I should put as much as I can INSIDE the PC as I can, both because it's more bang for buck and because it's less messy, etc.

Hmmm so X99. And a Xeon CPU. Hmmm

As far as the reviews, I actually did! Blackmagic is what's used by most, including Livestream branded hardware... all of those have Blackmagic stuff inside.
But, if you have better suggestions I'll take them!

You do realize that your chosen card is meant for pulling from 4K camera's and dumping the uncompressed, raw, content onto your system to be encoded later, right?

To stream at 4K off of it you would need to be simultaneously running an encoder to turn that uncompressed footage into something useful for uploading through XSplit/OBS. You want to take four feeds each generating something on par of ~800 GB per hour of footage, encode that, and then upload it. So you need a system that can do that encoding at a rate of 3.2 TB per hour while also handling all of the other tasks.

...

The system that you have provided links to will not be able to effectively do what you want it to do. For one, a 6700k does not have the PCIE lanes to handle 4 capture cards and a graphics card in the first place (even if you could find a motherboard that you could stuff them all onto).

Ah HA. Now this is what I was looking for.

Care to suggest replacements?

As I said, make five separate systems or go with a server.

Make a capture box for each camera individually and then dump the data to the fifth computer for processing and upload. Honestly, you are probably best off (assuming that you already have the cameras that you are going to be using) going and buying a capture card, a hundred dollar graphics card, and a low end CPU and mother board for a system that costs under 500 bucks (including the CC) and experimenting until you find exactly what you need to capture how you want. Then replicating that 4 times over.

Or just accept capturing at 1080p instead and make your life infinitely easier.

I agree with what others are saying on this, you need a minimum of 40 PCI-E lanes to run all of those capture cards with a GPU as well as an NVM-E SSD at the same time (using 36 PCI-E lanes [40 lanes on a 6850K][28 lanes on a 6800K]). Cheapest processor for this would be a 6850K.

Another problem would be the sheer amount of data that you would be moving while using 4K. SSDs are good and all, but for storage, you would need datacenter HDDs for the capacity (and price saving). Otherwise, I would also suggest making five separate systems.

The test build is the best solution, except I don't have a lot of availability on parts here in Brazil. I pretty much have to know what to get and then go get it in the US...
I kinda like the 5 machine set up. But that complicates things because we're limited on SPACE in the control room. Hmmm

The problem is that I have been tinkering with this for a while and the build I would recommend is a minimum of $1200 USD over your budget, those capture cards are not nice on the budget.

Current tinker-build:

Ok so I built one for 6.4k but it's including monitor, keyboard, mouse, software, everything. Not too bad when the option we were considering at first, was getting a Livestream rig for $8k.
This thing is probably a lot better and for less.
Opinions?

Few things to suggest. Intel Xeon E5-2650 V4 go for $200 used on ebay.com. Also, 128GB of memory is a little too overkill. Perhaps 96GB or 64GB is good. Also get a Samsung M.2. Much better performance for the extra few bucks. What the heck are those CPU coolers? Never seen then before. Lastly, you may as well get Windows 10 Pro for the extra few bucks. Gives you a few more advanced features.

I was gonna get the Samsung M.2 because it's what I have and I love it... but it didn't show up on the compatibility list, and I'm not sure why... maybe the size?
Those coolers are the only liquid ones listed, it was either that or huge Noctua ones that I was afraid of how much space they'd take... But they're cooler master. We trust that brand, don't we?

And yeah, Windows Pro. Let's see.

But used CPUs? Off eBay of all places? Are you sure?

Type in the CPU on ebay.com. There are tons and they look very reliable. To save $1600, I think it is worth it.

I realized that the m.2 is different from that that Samsung makes theirs for. Also the CPU cooler makes sense now that I look at it. You can buy them from about $80 on amazon.com.

I think it's because that motherboard takes 2242 drives. Samsungs are 2280s right?

So ok, sticking with that, and sticking with the coolers. Gonna check the CPUs...

If you want a Samsung M.2... https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Cf9pQV

Changed the motherboard slightly. Also that motherboard is capable with dual SLI so that you can get two GTX 1080 still under the $6000. Although, that being said, I don't know if having two GPUs will cause you to not be able to put all for capture cards in.

I thought about that but it has 5 slots total... so nope. I need 4 for the capture cards...

Maybe a motherboard change is in order? With one more slot and maybe one that also accepts Samsung M.2?

I know games are dropping SLI, but it would still be crazy helpful for rendering, wouldn't it. Hmmm

Titan X?

Yeah I thought about putting a Titan in there... and if I get the used CPUs I have money for that and then some. HMMMM

If I save $1600 on the CPUs I might even put TWO Titans. *scratches head*

Or perhaps getting better capture cards is something to look into... is there one that is more compact?
