I don't want to pirate, simply to understand why everyone tells me that I can pay $35 for a key and be done with it...  ???? Is that pirating? Sorry for my lack of experience. Never used windows 10 or installed an OS

Chances are, they're talking about pirating a cracked version (bad idea), or buying from a grey market (also a bad idea).

 

That leaves you with 4 reasonable/good choices:

Buying legit from Microsoft

Linux

Waiting for a sale

A user marketplace that sells retail licenses/keys that they got on sale or in bulk

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

It's not pirating, it's just people using the Microsoft Developer Network to get keys much cheaper than retail, then reselling them for profit.

 

I got my windows 8.1 pro key from /r/MicrosoftSoftwareSwap nearly two years ago, and it's worked perfectly, I've even used it on multiple devices without issue.

It's not a legit key. It is cheap because it was stolen somewhere else before and resell. There is no guarantee it will work

lots of youtubers are sponsored by G2A, so i would have to say it seems fine honestly. I got my windows 10 pro key from Kinguin for $28, and its working fine, been 4 months. Honestly i could see why people prefer verified vendors, but honestly i'd take the risk and hopefully the rewards outweigh the risks

I always say buy at your own risk but I never encourage it. I don't know why MS lets these things happen other than they have no power to crack down in Hong Kong (unlikely) or they don't care about people who do not have money (most likely).

You are looking this way in black and white. But in short, only 100% legit keys are those with $100+ price tag. Its not that bad price when you compare it to almost any piece of hardware, or even AAA game. You could get 2 AAA games with same price and after few years games would be boring but OS would only be starting its life with you. I'm using same Win7 I bought 2010.

 

The sub-$50 keys are grey market ones. They are bought or sometimes ripped from places where they are really cheap. Like low income countries, OEM machines, Enterprice batches etc. Some work, others don't. Thats why services like G2A and Kinguin are selling protection with keys.

Here's a personal anecdote: I got my Windows 7 Ultimate key for $10 4 years ago and I'm using the same key now that I'm on Windows 10 Pro. And no I didn't get it from G2A, I got it from a Microsoft Developer (Yes proof was shown through a Skype call that he was from MS) that was selling it on a forum.

 

I'm pretty sure it's not allowed to link to other places when it involves a "grey" area when it comes to marketing. So unfortunately I cannot get you in contact with the person that sold it to me. Though I don't think they're active anymore.
