Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my internet connection and I was hoping someone on the forums is able to help me out.

My internet used to be complete garbage (under 1Mbit up and down, 100 ping was normal and continuous random spikes to 1000+) so I switched ISPs, got a new modem and everything regarding the quality seems fine now.

But unfortunately another problem arose, which is these random disconnects that I'm having. I'm just playing a game or doing some work on my PC and my entire connection just disappears (wired). My PC still says there's a connection, no yellow warning icon or the red X. My wireless devices also lose connection. I unplug the power from my router, wait for ~20 sec and plug it back in, and everything seems to work fine again. Until it happens again, sometimes up to a couple of hours later.

My setup regarding ethernet is as follows: Downstairs is the ISPs modem, which is wired directly to my router upstairs, which is connected to my desktop PC through ethernet cable as well.

I'm a student living with 4 other students in the same house, so I'd like to avoid messing with the modem too much if it influences their connections as well.

My own router is an Asus RT-N16.

I was told it might have to do something with DHCP and IP adress conflicts, so I disabled DHCP in my router's settings, but it didn't help at all.

Does anyone have any suggestion on what to do here? Thank you in advance.

The thing is, all the lights seem to be blinking as they should, and the router is fully accessible through my browser. I heard bridge mode or Access Point mode can sometimes solve connection issues when connecting a router to an existing router modem (so the one from the ISP), which I tried, to no avail unfortunately. I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong regarding the settings, so are you sure getting a new one is the only option?

Have you tried connecting a pc directly to your modem? It does sound like an ip conflict, not dhcp related,  but a routing issue

While my connection was down, I connected my laptop directly to the modem and everything worked fine.

alright, so I guess your router is either rerouting traffic or having some kind of level 3 conflict with your modem. You can disable ip routing in your modem or get a switch.
