Need Some Help - trig identites

my414

SO, I just failed a quiz and I have a test on Friday and I was wondering If somebody could teach me some tricks. To me they just seem like guess and check simplifying... we have a crap teacher, check homework, learn something new, go home do homework, repeat. I went for help at least 3 times and I am getting nowhere.

If you do not know how to help please do not respond. thanks   -_-

What do you need help with? It's basic algebra

if you have a few memorized, you can derive pretty much everything else. Replace each function with a variable if you need to to make it less tedious.

For example:

sec(x) sin (x)

tan(x) + cot (x)   = sin(x)

Brute force: convert EVERYTHING to sin and cos.

Yes but.... sometimes it is not THAT easy.

Well if you need to brute force it, chances are it wasn't easy to begin with.

I had 40 minutes to answer 8 identity questions today.... brute forcing can not work due to time limit.

Would have taken me less time if I were writing that on paper, didn't have to upload it, it is doable since most of the times you will have to brute force convert everything down, then simplify, then consolidate.

What level math is this? And give minutes a question is more than enough.

Just convert them all to complex exponentials and solve them manually. :P

In all seriousness, trig identities are really annoying.  The best you can do is memorize, memorize, memorize.

Doing tons and tons of practice problems always helps me memorize things.  It's a grind, but it works.  Maybe try that?

The best you can do is memorize, memorize, memorize.

You're kidding right? Do that for math and you'll get shafted every time, especially when you start hitting proofs.

Yeah, that doesn't help at all. Still have no idea what level math that is.

I'm referring to trig identities and only trig identities.  Obviously you can't memorize your way through entire math courses, but there's isn't much rhyme or reason to trig identities unless you know the complex math behind them.

At least that's how I felt in high school.

Yeah they are confusing. In my a2t we are moving on to graphing sine waves in radians.
