Ecc won't really make a difference, I wouldn't spend the extra 200, Just get good backups.

Well, it also eliminates the need for a monitor, keyboard, and another NIC should he want a second NIC. Plus IPMI is really nice. Compared to his other build it's only like $50 more because I shifted the budget toward the board rather than a monitor+keyboard+NICs.

Not really. You can use the same monitor, keyboard and mouse that your other pc uses. You won't need a monitor other than setup.

Okay. I will consider. The reason i was getting 2 network cards is to connect with Internet + each computer. Is this not necessary?

No. You will need a router to which each computer is connected.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Except it's a pain when you want to have to jump on locally to have to move the server or your setup. It's much easier to just open up a program on your desktop/laptop. And again, it's not much in the general scheme of things especially since there are numerous benefits.

And you dont really have to do that ever. You have ssd for remote access.

The motherboard I suggested has two Intel NICs, but no, one NIC is sufficient.

I've had times where I've actually had to connect to the physical machine, and having IPMI makes it so much easier. But again, there are still plenty of other benefits. Scrubbing reduces the likelihood of hitting a URE during a rebuild, plus is just good in general for data integrity. Plus four RAM slots instead of two. Plus more SATA slots and dual NICs.

And you're not talking about a lot of extra money. $1500 vs. $1300 isn't a big difference.

that is what I have done, instead of a switch I just added extra NICs as extra clients were added. I recommend it and it keeps each client in a separate network
