New Server Build

Poohy14

Well I just bought some server parts to replace my old server CPU, which was a Intel i5 3570k. Wanted to go with a Xeon since I was running a Plex server and I noticed it lagging at times since I had multiple streams going, so I figured I would upgrade to something that would help me out. I was looking for a cheap Xeon (yeah cheap, Right...) but some can be cheap if they are used and that is what I wanted, (field tested). I stumbled across a Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3 12 Core 24 Threads and I couldn't believe the price. So I bought it (this was back in August). Yesterday, I picked up a Asrock Extreme4 motherboard and 16GB of HyperX ram. So with the Xeon, motherboard and ram I only paid $426 USD, which I thought was so worth it, I put it together and ran some benchmarks on it for the cpu and all I have to pay is that I want to build another.

So here is the build
Case: Rosewill Server rackmount 4U 15 bay
CPU: Intel Xeon E5-2670 v3
Mobo: Asrock Extreme4
Ram: HyperX DDR4 2133 16GB (4x4GB)
PSU: Fractal 650W
Raid C: LSI Megaraid 9261-8i
Storage:   Kingston 240GB (OS)
1TB Seagate Barracuda (stores random things on it, been have warning signs that it is dying for the last year)

6x HGST NAS 4TB (just put my 7th one in but haven't figured out how to add it to the raid yet) (HDDs are running in RAID 6)

GPU: Nvidia GT520

Sorry for the bad photos, couldn't find my camera in my mess of things in my house. But I will take some better photos some day.

Hum ok but what's the question?

There was no question or else I would have asked one and it wouldn't of been in build logs.

Thank you.

I like recording the speeds the the blender benchmark.

Here is my little spread sheet of all my tested system. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-33aLdbJR4CWOnYuUu3vzcoiwqNZ-qyh_5YbX3kCUSc/edit?usp=sharing

Your system seems a bit low, as its half the speed of a 6700 that i tested.

Seems like this program is more for single threaded applications and if so, the 6700 would be better because Xeons are more for multi-threaded applications.

Edit: Nevermind, seems like a multi-thread to me.

Edit: I will also do my 4790k as well for you.

Edit: Did it on my I7 4790k and it was a lot slower than my 12 core by 4 minutes

How much did that cost you?

The whole server?

Edit:

CPU: $209
Mobo: $110  (bought this as a open box and still get a $40 Mail-in rebate so that is the final price)
PSU: $65
RAM: $108
RAID Card: $144
HDD: $980 (4TB x7 drives)
SSD: $65
Case: $105

So in total I spent:  $1,678

Which is pretty good for a server with a 12 core CPU. If I was going to do a gaming build I still would use my 12 core, ram and mobo since that is only $427. A 6700k and a good mobo would be close to $500 and that is still without ram yet so the route I did was cheaper and still ended up with more cores.

Killer cpu for the money. That cpu is worth what the total build is if you bought it current gen and you would only get maybe 10 - 12 percent more performance.

Yeah I was surprised at how much it was so that's why I bought it but I do believe it is Haswell-EP but its only 2 years only which isn't bad to me, price to performance I couldn't pass it up. Plus I can OC it from 2.3Ghz to 3.1 Ghz.

Yeah it is for the price for the Mobo, CPU and ram for a cheap x99 system. Also I am overclokcing the CPU on air and is doing a good job on a Be Quiet! Pure Rock cooler.
