Well dont assume its your card yet. Do you have the drivers installed for your card? Do you have motherboard video outputs so you can see?

Or, do you have something like a laptop you can plug into the monitor to check that isn't the problem, as other people have said, don't assume it is the GPU until you've eliminated the other possibilities.

If the card is the culpret, than RMA it. If it is out of warrenty, than clen off all thermal paste then reaply and hope it was just thermal paste bridgeing the wrong connection.

I have another 970. The slot works, cables work, I don't has a dp connector

Not working in your rig and not working in his rig.

Was it working up until a point?

Lightning, was it working fine up until it all of a sudden wasn't/gradual problems developed to the point it died etc etc.

These are things you should have asked him.

It sounds like dead hardware IMO

Very strange indeed. I recently put a 10+ year old video card that had been in the box for 6+ years in a rig for testing purposes and it worked fine (didn't even have a displayport or HDMI, hah!) As far as I'm aware, most PC hardware isn't prone to failure from being left in cold storage.

Maybe it was dusty and when it was fired up for the first time in a long time, something something wiz-bang-short-circuit. I'm honestly not sure though.

You've got three options at this point;

1. Post to a different forum where you might get more knowledgeable people (use a descriptive, attractive title and make sure to thoroughly explain the problem and the steps you've taken)

2. Take it to a repair shop and get them to have a look at it assuming it isn't under warranty

3. Tear it down yourself, clean it, reapply thermal compound and re-assemble.

Hope that helps, best of luck.

heres a fix for sometimes odd behavior : if you have one of the power plugs running off adapters , swap it

I had similar issues on my asus r9 270x , I had one of the 6 pins running of an adapter and it wouldn't boot off that one even tho the diagnosis LED said that it was fine , swapping it around so it was in the second 6pin  made it run just fine
