External USB Drive question?

Hello.  I was wondering if I could take a disc drive off of an old desktop and somehow connect it to my laptop via USB port.  Is there any way to make an adapter or are there any on the market?

Yes, there are various HDD to USB adapters, normally in the form of hard drive external enclosures.

yes you can buy sata to usb cables.

 

ignore the enclosure suggestions, those are for hdds and ssds so wont work for this

If it's a SATA drive, you can still use some kind of SATA to USB converter.

i.e. This is a IDE or SATA to USB adapter. It will convert the interface of the 5.25" DVD drive into a USB port that you can plug into your laptop or whatever else you want to use. I included an adapter that does both because hell if I know what kind of drive you have other than it's an optical drive.

 

If this is not what you're looking for then you are not clearly explaining what you want.

I don't think I could use my old one because it has two cables-one is a SATA cable, which the adapter works with, but one goes into the motherboard.  I don't know where the cable that goes into the mobo would go.  I assume it's for powering it, but I could be wrong.
