Hey everyone :)

So I have discussed with allot of you guys on what to build. I'll be using my computer for 3D programs, programming, games and some video editing.

These are the specs that I have concluded I will have, am I overlooking anything or am I ok to go ahead with this build? The main idea is performance, reliability and future proofing. I do not plan to overclock.

Note: I am going to install Windows 10 Pro and Linux on the SSD drive. I will also be using 2 27" inch Samsung monitors.

Edit: From discussion, rig has changed to this https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/NFqnyf

A cheap motherboard like the MSI B150 would be able to support your other components. I would buy a better graphics card with the money, or water cooling.

B150 chipset motherboards don't support overclocking and OP is planning on getting an i7-6700K, which is overclockable and getting a B150 chipset mobo would be just throwing cash down the drain.

My Daily Driver:

Acer Predator Helios 300
»« Intel Core i5-8300H »« 16GB DDR4 RAM »« NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB »« Silicon Power A60 512 GB M.2 SSD »«
Toshiba PC L200 1 TB HDD »« Microsoft Windows 10 Home »«

A bit cheaper, more SSD Space, bigger and better PSU, cheaper but still very good mobo and imo a better case that also is a "silent" edition.

Last but not least a better GTX 1080, GALAX over Gigabyte any day.

Also just get the mobo and stuff to overclock, overclocking skylake is pretty stragith forward, unless you get an insanely bad chip most hit 4.5Ghz quite easily.

i7-6700k  Cooling: Deepcool Captain 240EX White GPU: GTX 1080Ti EVGA FTW3 Mobo: AsRock Z170 Extreme4 Case: Phanteks P400s TG Special Black/White PSU: EVGA 850w GQ Ram: 64GB (3200Mhz 16x4 Corsair Vengeance RGB) Storage 1x 1TB Seagate Barracuda 240GBSandisk SSDPlus, 480GB OCZ Trion 150, 1TB Crucial NVMe
(Rest of Specs on Profile)

You're right, and the CPU cooler was a clear indication of overclocking. Also, the only result that pops up when i search "lga 1151 motherboard overclock" on amazon is the ASUS one.

and if you not overclocking why go with the 6700k and not the 6700? save the money from them and get a 1080.

6700k has other benefits other than unlocked multiplier.

Lmao you don't search that. Search for the chipset, i.e. H110, B150, H170 or Z170. ^_^

Is has a higher TDP 91W as aposed to 61W and it has a higher base/turbo frequency. Other than that the chip is identical.

yes, those are the benefits. the biggest one is 3.40ghz base compared to 4.0ghz base.

honestly I think you are running the wrong approach here. 3D programs & Video editing / future proofing / don't plan to overclock. hmm.

And Since you mentioned programming I guess you know your way around that ticking box. So, in my mind you should go for a six core on X99, and more RAM. It would fit sort of fit the budget.

If you stick with 4 core switch the board, that one is overkill for any possible use on this planet. Have a look at Z170-A / Z170-Pro Gaming, they will support your components and will keep it way more cost efficient.

CPU cooler is great, ugly as hell of course but the case looks closed so no worries there.

Casewise: Have a look at the Define R5 - pretty similar, a bit bigger, top is closed (can be opened though), so no additional dust nightmare.

The 6700K is overclockable, you said you don't plan to. But then again you said future proofing, by the way that term is a total myth and doesn't exist, sort of. I would stick with the K since it is a bit more future proofy down the line. The DH14 will take it to 4.6 without any issues (running same setup here on a Z170 Pro Gaming)

850 EVO the SSD of choice for the price these days for a long time now. Can't do anything wrong there, would increase its size though. Dual OS, allthough they may be rather small at first, hmm... 500 will do better.

The GPU is currently $600. I bet ditching the k version of the processor and the $70 cooler, plus buying cheap mobo will save $400.

that'd get you a GTX 1080, but the titan is too expensive.
