Hello Linustechtips community!

I need your help again, but this time for choosing the right gaming monitor for myself.
Without much talking or writing :) straight to the question.

As the title says i am trying to figure out if g-sync technology really benefits the gaming performance, or is it just another gimmick from the manufacturers to make more money from folks like me.

A couple of months ago i had the opportunity to try Asus PG279Q, but unfortunately due to BLB and some funny lines in the middle of the display i had to return it to the shop. Dont get me wrong it is a good monitor but for this amount of money i would like to have a monitor which wont throw me some funny lines on the edge and the middle of the screen. I am using gtx 1080 and thats why i was searching for a g-sync 1440p 144hz gaming panel (i believe it was a good match to my gpu), but today all of a sudden i came across this panel BenQ XL2735 which neither supports G-Sync or Free-Sync. I read a couple of reviews and found out that people remained generally very satisfied with it, regardless of the gpus they were using AMD or Nvidia. So I am wondering, is gsync just another marketing trick? Will vsync do just fine until something really revolutionair comes out, or there is a weighty difference between vsync vs gsync vs nosync and once i have Nvidia gpu i would better stick to gsync?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Any advices are very appreciated (links of reviews, videos, or just personal opinion)

IF you can afford G-Sync, go for it. It can help with frame-timing by matching the panel with your frames per second.

V-Sync will actually stop your card from displaying all the frames that it can causing you to have input lag (you'll likely not notice unless you're looking for it).

No syncing can cause tearing at a certain point.

# MEGAH3RTZ     It is a very good monitor, but i had some bad experience with RMA, sending back waiting, getting another deffected one, sending back, waiting etc. They sent me 3 faulty displays. I am afraid to go with Asus again.

nvidia for now only supports g-sync, its not really gimmicky but more bad value for a lot of people. freesync doesnt have that disadvantage because its simply a lot cheaper than g-sync. what does happen is that technology's like g-sync and freesync add input lag to the display (dunno if you care though, just thought to mention it) compared to v-sync. g-sync and freesync do relieve stress from the gpu so if you like high framerates over a nicer screen go with g-sync. but its up to you if its worth it. i personally would love it but i can not justify the price hike for myself.

edit: oops gsycn and freesync REDUCE input lag compared to v-sync, fucked up there.

Simple answer: Are you seriosly annoyed by screen tearing? if the answer is yes, you should consider G-Sync.

If not, a less expensive not G-Sync panel is the better fit for you.

g-sync and freesync cause inputlag too, often harsher than v-sync.

It can go much higher in refresh rate than V-Sync as V-Sync will drop down to the lowest number it can.
