Stubborn acne?

Hello.  I have stubborn acne on on the upper sides of my face and some on my forehead.  I eat a healthy diet(salad, grilled chicken, etc.) and wash my face DAILY.  I do use acne cream and all natural apple cider vinegar(great temporary fix btw), but it never goes away.  What are some other methods for getting rid of acne?

Does your life have a lot of stress in it? If so that is the most likely the cause of it. It could also be your pillow case, wash it more often.

Oxy Clean is the product to use. Do they even still sell it. I see the teens now, with all the chemicals out it looks like acne is getting worse. Have long bangs and its even worser.

I don't know about you, but when I was in primary school, like 20 years ago, I knew people with acne that literally covered their entire face, along with some that had severe acne that covered their upper back and shoulders.

If anything, the chemicals are being developed more intelligently. For example, many makeup products now are designed to not aggravate acne (not make it worse), whereas in the "old days", putting on makeup was a guaranteed outbreak for those who had acne issues. Furthermore, there are new makeup products that actually contain acne medication in them, to help reduce your acne.

I had seen a case like that recently. It looked to be a teenager, 12 or 13 yrs old. She had long bangs which I think adds to the problem because of the oils or chemicals on the hair.

And I have seen it without long hair or bangs. Chemicals have been used in hair for almost a century now. It started becoming popular in the 50's with hair spray.

I don't even believe that acne is any worse now then it was before. Most people that have bad acne do so because of their skin having an excess of oil, and has nothing to do with their diet or the kind of chemicals they use in their hair.

Back when I was in high school I had acne issues.  Nothing made it go away until I started using Proactiv.  Just had to religuously follow the application routines for about a week before I saw results.

Not really that much stress-no more than anyone else, I guess.  I'll start washing my pillow case more often-I wash it weekly.

I do have some acne on my upper back, but not too bad.  I don't use makeup(I am male) and I do use Clearasil, but it doesn't help very much.

I have pretty short hair-no longer than half an inch.  I have a great diet, and I still have oily skin and it's pretty frustrating.

Yep - it sucks, but it's mostly biological.

Like others said, doctors can prescribe a weak antibiotic that kills the bacteria that builds up in pores which causes white heads. Dermatologists can prescribe more aggressive medicine if necessary but those are usually reserved for serious cases.

If you have oily skin, I would suggest looking into getting a body wash and face soap with salicylic acid which is used in anti-acne soaps. Some have benzoyl peroxide in them, primary face soaps, but I tend to avoid those personally since peroxide can cause bleaching of clothes and towels.

I'll try some hydrogen peroxide.  Thanks for the advice :)

I know some guys that went to a doctor and got prescribed (I think, maybe just given) a pill called accutane. It's apparently real hard on the body, but it all cleared up their acne problems really quick, and permanently (you don't take the pills for very long). From what I gather it just decreases an oil that your skin produces that causes acne. I'm not sure how hard it is to get, but in the military apparently if you just ask they give it out no problem, so I imagine that you could get it fairly easy.

Not something you want to take without consulting your doctor - something that changes your biochemistry to that degree most likely has some pretty severe potential side effects.

Yup, they constantly monitor your liver and kidneys while you're taking the stuff.

Diet have very little to do with acne breakouts. Acne is caused when oil becomes sticky (due to hormonal changes), and starts clogging pores when the oil mixes with dead skin cells. Anaerobic bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) takes advantage of the lack of oxygen inside the pores and starts multiplying. The immune system cells called neutrophils engulf the bacteria and they die afterwards which results to pus. The migration of neutrophils causes inflammation and that results to the red bump in the skin.

To help get rid of acne, try using a cleanser with at least 1 to 2% salicylic acid. It helps in clearing up pores because it's an exfoliant. Also, salicylic acid is an anti inflammatory agent which lessens redness. After washing your face, apply either 2.5 or 5% Benzoyl Peroxide cream or ointment (this worked wonders for me). But make sure that your skin can tolerate benzoyl peroxide. If it becomes dry, use hypoallergenic non-comedogenic moisturizer. Try building your tolerance to Benzoyl Peroxide by using it once a day preferably in evening. This chemical can cause light sensitivity so use sunscreen too.

If two weeks passed and nothing has happened or your acne is severe, you might need a dermatologist consult. The doctor might give you tetracyclines or if it's really worse, "Roaccutane" aslo known as Isotretinoin.

Below is the brand of Benzoyl Peroxide I'm using.IMG_4973.JPG
