Lightning just struck and most of our plugged in devices got a huge almost 2 second long shock.  Pc did not shut down by my screen did,  I turned off the pc immediately.

Firstly,  I have not turned on the Pc yet and still waiting out the storm with all my main devices plugged out.

The pc and screen definitely got shocked.

My question

1 - Is there anything I should do before powering it on again?

2 -  If the pc turns on and everything *seems* fine,  can there still be damage

3 - If the pc turn on and everything seems fine how do I check for damages.

Probably a stupid post and most of you would say just turn on the pc and check...  But I am very cautious,  $2000 pc isn't a joke

(Yes I had a UPS but I think the surge came through the ether net cable)

i do not think there is anything you can do except check for physical damage and remove as many components as you can & test individually. Thats interesting I would never have thought about protecting my ethernet cables from lightning

Read up about it alot while I'm sitting here waiting for the storm to pass,  and alot of people said that a strike can come through ethernet cables and that you can't protect it cause it comes directly from the line that goes to ISP.  Also another thing I noticed,  My wife didn't have any connection to her Mobile data service provider (The same provider as our Home internet)

That made me think that their equipment or towers/whatever where hit.

PC is now turned on with no visible damage or smell,  Is there any way I can check for damage,  cause I can't imagine there's no damage after that kind of surgery that lasts for 2 seconds and turns off my screens???

I can't see and dead pixels not can I see any damage...  ANOTHER THING TO Note is that Al my PC's fans went quiets while it surged and I could hear them staring back up just before I started the shutdown!!!???

Overcurrent protection was most likely triggered and shut down everything but you said it lasted 2 seconds... could that be enough to keep the PC powered? xD

You're here talking to us with a PC powered on, so clearly the lightning didn't hit your house directly. If it had, best case scenario your home's wiring would be fried and the breaker box looking something like burnt toast, worst case your house is on fire. I think we can rule that one out.

If lightning had hit a direct feeder line into your house, you wouldn't have power, so I think that can be ruled out too.

What's most likely, imo, is that the lightning hit a main line or substation near you. Hence the momentary power flash (was it a surge, or a brownout?). Happens pretty frequently around here, and sometimes my UPS goes nuts for a few seconds while the power fluctuation settles down. You're probably fine, but if you want to open up your case, sniff around for the scent of burnt capacitors and check around with a flashlight for anything that looks suspicious, I wouldn't blame you. Your monitor is almost certainly fine. When those fry, it's not a question of burnt-out pixels.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

If it came Through the ether Net Cable how Did the moinitor shut Off?

Really all you can do is test it and if anything broken Check the Power Surge proctectors warranty most cover X amount of damage not that i believe these labels personally but a phone call might be worth it
