I recently ordered a 4gb ddr3 dimm of Kingston Value RAM clocked at 1600MHz to replace the 2 sticks of 1GB ram that were inside my mom's old workstation PC

New ram:  https://goo.gl/MCVK3y

System Specs:

-Pentium Dual Core E5400 @2.7GHz

-MSI G41M-P33

-Poop Intel integrated graphics

-2GB DDR3 RAM @800MHZ

-450w Power Supply

-1 TB Hard drive

I did quite a bit of research and multiple articles stated that if the ram has a higher clock speed than the motherboard and processor supports, it would be under-clocked, but still function. (The mobo supports 800/1066MHz  https://goo.gl/S1FFl2)

When I popped in the new stick and tried to power on the PC, it would go on, the fans would start turning and the LED on the mobo would turn on, but then it would all turn off. It would keep repeating this over and over until I unplugged the PC entirely.

When I put the old sticks back in however, it would boot perfectly fine, and sometimes have a message saying "Previous attempt at overclocking failed", which I presumed was from the increased clock speed of the new stick.

If anyone has any ideas or any knowledge about this, it would be a great help.

if ram isnt supported in mhz by the motherboard it can also be stuck on compatibility issues, ram stick itself should be fine i think u just run into compatibility issues, because 1600mhz ram run default at 1333 at first boot, since its 800-1066mhz  its not a suprise it cant boot on 1600mhz stick :) ( coz they boot at 1333 )

So the stick itself is fine, and I'm just a dumbo for buying it?

if the mobo does not support the ram speed the ram itself will just run slower , but it might be simply unsupported

RyzenAir : AMD R5 3600 | AsRock AB350M Pro4 | 32gb Aegis DDR4 3000 | GTX 1070 FE | Fractal Design Node 804
RyzenITX : Ryzen 7 1700 | GA-AB350N-Gaming WIFI | 16gb DDR4 2666 | GTX 1060 | Cougar QBX

basicly yes, a board that doesnt support 1333mhz atleast cant run / boot any ram above 1066mhz

u need to find actual 800mhz or 1066mhz sticks in ur case ( rare to see those speeds and mobos tho ;o )

all ddr3 starting from 1333mhz all the way up to 3400mhz will boot first time on 1333mhz

yeah but hes got a 800mhz/1066mhz mobo, all ram 1333mhz or above boots on 1333mhz atleast, since his mobo doesnt support that he cant *post*

but 1600mhz ram can run at 800 , hmm... last time i had compability issues was on DDR2

check the mobo support list if that ram is supported at all

RyzenAir : AMD R5 3600 | AsRock AB350M Pro4 | 32gb Aegis DDR4 3000 | GTX 1070 FE | Fractal Design Node 804

yes 1600mhz ram can run at 800mhz, but by default it boots at 1333mhz, if the mobo cant boot the default settings of the ram there is absolutely no way he can set it to 800mhz or post at all. in that case he cant do anything....

he has to be able to post to underclock ram or set timings, which is impossible for him with 1333mhz+ sticks on that board
