Graphics card decision: GTX 1060 3GB or AMD Rx 480 8GB

Yes I am comparing with the 8GB model. On amazon uk I found models for both I would be interested in buying for £210±10 (specifically for the 1060, looking at the MSI Gaming X which is overclocked, and for the 480 I'm pretty sure its the reference card, the one made by sapphire? correct me on that if I'm wrong ) I had initially been looking at  the 1060 but I guess some sales recently have pulled the 480 model down. Now I am only gaming at 1080p for next 3 years lets say, and will probably not be playing every AAA high ultra title, but maybe Battlefield 1, Doom, Fallout 4, Alien isolation, LoL, overwatch. Is this a stupid question and should the answer 100% be the 480 8GB in this situation? I want to stick to this price, although £239 gets me a 6GB 1060..... so many choices, not really sure. Any help would be appreciated.

System specs: i3 6100, 8GB 2133 RAM, 500W, 240 GB SSD in the fractal node 304 case

get the 6GB 1060, save up more if you dont have the cash

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

For the sake of your ears, don't get the reference RX480. Especially you have to endure that torture for three years, just to save 30 bucks, isn't worth it.

It's not a contest, RX 480 4GB or 8GB are faster than a 1060 3GB in any game that's not Anno 2205. I would get an aftermarket cooled RX 480 4GB which should be available for around the same.

Yes. but saving up more for a 1060 is definitely an option

For 40 pounds more it's not worth it, it's only 5% faster than a 480 whatever its memory amount.

The reference 480 is loud and power inefficient, I would probably get a 470 4GB with a good cooler.

If the 1060 3GB has a good cooler on it (almost anything but reference) get that over the 480.

i5-6600k (4.6) | Dark Rock 3 | MSI GAMING X 1060 6GB | 8GB DDR4 | 120GB SSD & 1TB HDD | Crystal 460x

thanks for all the input so far. so my thoughts are that getting a non-reference 480 will bump up an extra maybe £20, putting around the 1060 price point, so I'm now kinda comparing those 2 models, at that higher price bracket. The 1060 3gb i was looking at is extremely quiet, with fan off settings for low load, and is the highest overclock i have seen for that card

Acually the EVGA Gaming 1060, Zotac Mini 1060 and in general the low cost ones have pretty shit cooling, just a hunk of aluminium a'la Intel stock cooler.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Zotac/GeForce_GTX_1060_Mini_3_GB/28.html

Before you say hey, those numbers are way too low, TPU measures noise at 100cm whereas other sites (which report sound levels upwards of 50dBA) measure at 50cm or less.

lol ye uk, and again the 1060 3gb model i found seemed kind of top of the line, so either top of line 3gb or go to next bracket (ie, 480 8gb, 1060 6gb base rated cards)

I'd get this https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01IQS6QE6/

Well cooled, a pretty good PCB for overclocking, and 205 pounds

to Energycore: i feel ill stick to the lower price, thanks for the suggestion, but have looked at so many reviews/comparisons between 1060 & 480, seems like for the same price is dependant on whether you want nvidia or amd.

I guess my main question is, how much benefit will i get from such a drastic rise from 3gb VRAM to 8 gb VRAM?
