I am thinking of building a new computer and I was looking at the rx 480 but I was wondering if there is a huge difference between the rx 470 4gb, the rx 480 4gb and the rx 480 8gb or is the difference just future proof-ness and price

rx 470 and rx 480 has around a 10%-15% difference. RX 480 8gb isn't really future-proofness in my opinion, but the 8gb VRAM is.

Future-proof is not a thing. Between the 470 and 480 there is a noticable difference in performance, now and in the future. Between the 4GB and 8GB versions, if you plan on running above 1080p, or even using some games that take a lot of frame buffer, I'd go with the 8GB

Main Rig: R9 5950X @ PBO, RTX 3090, 64 GB DDR4 3666, InWin 101, Full Hardline Watercooling

Server: R7 1700X @ 4.0 GHz, GTX 1080 Ti, 32GB DDR4 3000, Cooler Master NR200P, Full Soft Watercooling

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

HTPC: i7-7700K @ 4.6 GHz, GTX 1050 Ti, 16 GB DDR4 3200, AliExpress K39, IS-47K Cooler

Router: R3 2200G @ stock, 4GB DDR4 2400, what are cases, stock cooler

I don't have a problem...

I do some light video editing here and there would I notice the difference between 4 gig and 8 gig there

I don't think so. People edited on GTX 980s that had 4GB of VRAM and that seemed fine. Video Editing is more CPU intensive i believe.

I've heard AMD has better older-gen card support compared to nvidia, and from seeing benchmarks, i think an RX 480 could last 3-4 years in my guess. DX12 is the future, so it might last
