FYI there's a possibility that the school blocks ports. So you may have to use port 80 or some other essential port to connect to the vpn over. Back when I was in high school I've set up a vpn using pfsense and found out that I couldn't access it since the ports were blocked. Work around is trivial if you've got your own vpn server (since you can dictate which port it will be connecting over) but the troubleshooting period can be annoying.

Also I use a router (old desktop running pfsense) for my vpn and personally believe that to be the best option. If you use a raspberry pi you'll most likely need to port forward stuff and as far as I can tell that introduces a certain degree of insecurity to your network. I guess it doesn't really matter that much as long as you're not using a very common port for your WAN to LAN access but it's still something to consider.

so you had a desktop with pfsense connected to it's own router? (I'm not that good with networking)

My router is an old desktop with pfsense installed. The previous router (thing that most people think of when they hear router) is nothing more than an access point connected to my LAN. Hopefully that explains it better and if not these are the sources I used to set it up:

That said the UI has since changed quite a bit in a recent upgrade so those will be a little difficult to follow along. Wendel has done a bit on pfsense after the UI upgrade so here's a more relevant video:
