i7-4790k CM Hyper 212X VS DeepCool Lucifer Gamer Storm

nathphotographs

I currently have an i7-4790k and am looking for a new CPU cooler. I would like to do some slight overclocking so keep that in mind. My choices are the CoolerMaster Hyper 212X or the DeepCool Lucifer Gamer Storm. From the research I have done, the Lucifer Gamer Storm seems to be the better option of the two. I am leaning towards the Lucifer Gamer Storm. Do you have any experience with this cooler? What overclock could I get on it without having too high temps?

Which of the two would you go with?

Not sure about any of those coolers, but keep in mind that i7 4790k is running hot.

4,4GHz on all cores is no problem.

But anything beyond that is just a strugle for me.

May I ask what cooler are you using now, and what temps do you get from aida64 stress test? Stress testing CPU + FPU + chache or just FPU.

The gamerstorm will crush a 212 in cooling performance. I've heard of people cooling 4790Ks pasively with rhe lucifers (at stock speeds of course).

The thing with the 212x is that all the luttle things that CM said they did to improve performance actually made little difference at all.

I was able to run 4.8GHz with my 212evo when I first got it.  Ran it with these same settings for months without issues.  Gaming temps were usually around 60°c or so which is fine.  I did have 2 fans on it most of the time, but they were both only running about 1300rpm and it doesn't make much of a difference.

edit: later I upgraded to a nh-D14 and saw a 6°c temp drop on the hottest core
