I recommend putting your nas drives in a raid 1 config. You may loose some of your space but by doing so you make an automatic backup of your drive. Here is a video explaining what raid 1 is and how it is done.

OMG no!   RAID is not backup. Run a damn back up if you want backup. Can we please kill this misconception, bury it, and defile it's grave.

What NAS device/OS will you be using? That will dictate what method you will use to backup your data to disk.

Also don't worry much about the disks being vertical, more important is moving them while spinning. The Storinator mounts their disks upright (as seen in a few of Linus' videos).

If using FreeNAS or any linux/unix solution, you can just rsync the data on a schedule and swap disks out.

Take a look at Synctoy, simplest solution for what you want. You can create a batch file to automate the process. Honestly a lot of external disks you buy nowadays come with backup software.

Unless you want versioning...

i watched this and that seems like it will work. thx
