It's when the Coil, whines.

TomsMindBlown.gif

It's when the coil inside the motor of the fan is low grade or damaged and causes it to whine.

It is basically the electrical noise that components emit inside computer parts.

It is the buzz sound that you hear wit home low-grade components when the yard being stressed.

I'm not sure of the science behind it and it's kinda hard to describe, but you'll know it when you hear it.  It's very unpleasant to listen to.  I'm sensitive to noises and I'll get a headache very quickly if I hear it.  It's like a monotone squeal.

Most high-quality PSUs won't have it, at least not while they're new.  Just get a quality one and you should be fine.

You don't until you actually use one. Sometimes it might whine just only under heavy load.

if i get something like that can i change it back from the shop i got it from?

Most likely they will make you return it to the manufacturer.

Best bet is to just get a quality PSU to begin with and not risk your time wasted rewiring everything.

I recommend corsair.

Corsair, Seasonic, and XFX are all brands that I have used and I have never had any coil whine from them.

Coil whine is usually caused by inductors (a.k.a. chokes) when they charge / discharge.

Inductors and capacitors are commonly found on motherboards and graphics cards. Their job is to either hold a voltage charge (capacitors) or a current charge (inductors).

A choke / inductor is essentially a coil(s) of copper (or other kinds of metals) wire wrapped around a magnet. When a voltage source flows through the copper coil, it creates a magnetic field, hence, current. When this happens, it can sometimes cause an annoying noise...which is what you call "coil whine." This can be due to the quality of the component, or it may simply be a defective part right from the manufacturing plant.

Coil whine can also be created from other type of electrical components other than chokes. (i.e. transformers or motors)

I'd add that often sympathetic vibrations between physical objects in a component create a "coil whine"-esque noise. I think (just a hunch) that this type of noise is more common than actual coil whine these days, and sometimes you can identify it and it's exact location and fix it with glue (not recommended really, but factory workers often use glue in these situations.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.
