HD6950 BSOD

Go to solution Solved by spence55,

Tried the oven trick and now it works perfectly, thanks anyway for the support :-)

While using my computer after about half hour the screen goes image goes all distorted and blue screen appears. When the PC restarts the graphics card doesn't output anything (no signal on monitor). I have kept restarting and it still shows nothing. I tried switching the BIOS from 2 to 1 and back again, but still nothing. I left my PC off for a day, and thought I try it again. This time it worked as normal for around 2hrs, but then did the same thing again. Please help!

What drivers are you running? Does the card have any other known issues? What are the thermals like?

Try to take out the card and see how the capacitors look.

check if they're cracked

I have had the same driver since I built my PC which was a year ago. But only started to go wrong 2 days ago. There was no problems with it up until now and the temps were around no more than 50°c

Nothing wrong with the cap, and shoundnt be because there all solid caps

That doesn't mean they won't fail. It's just that are more efficient and less prone to failure versus electrolytic capacitors.

What is the rest of your system specs? CPU? Motherboard? How is the temperature for the other components?

Oh yeah, is the 50*C with the computer sitting idle (i.e. in Desktop / Web browser open), or during gaming or running the HD 6950 at 100% load (i.e. a stress testing program)??

50*C idle versus 50*C load is a veerry big difference.

Oh, I got told by someone that they will never fail, they must be wrong, thanks for pointing out.

System Spec -

and it 28-35*C idle and max 50*C while gaming

Hmmm...what are the temperatures of the CPU and/or motherboard areas (i.e. VRM)?

It would be great if you could provide us with all the information about your system

- Provide what make & model of the power supply that you are using. This is important (i.e. Corsair HX650 650W)

- brand & model of RAM you are using

- Driver version you are using for the graphics card (i.e. 13.9 or 13.10 beta, etc)

- etc

Does the computer BSOD when NOT gaming? Just regular web browsing / text document use?

Did you install any new updates / drivers for your system recently? (this included Windows Update, Adobe Updates, etc)

Possibilities:

1) It could be memory failure if it BSOD's during gaming. Let it either be system memory (RAM) or Video memory on the HD 6950 (VRAM).

2) Unstable power supply; voltages on the +12 / +5v / +3.3v rail(s) is spiking/dropping too much, beyond spec tolerance.

3) Software related issue (drivers / updates)

I am currently using a cheap HD5450 so I can use my pc and the temps are fine (29-35*C) and it hasnt Blue Screened once. Also it BSOD at anytime whether I was gaming, browsing the internet or on using a program (eg:Dreamweaver), it isn't just when im gaming.

I haven't updated any drivers for the card since I installed windows and I haven't installed windows updates in a while. And I do not update my Dreamweaver or Photoshop because with adobe update because its cracked. I wouldn't think its the drivers anyway because I get nothing on screen after its BSOD for hours, almost a whole day, then it works again and after about 30 minutes it BSOD again. Its like a continuous cycle.
