Project started this Sept 2016 and was off and on through out. And was an intro for me into CPU & GPU OC for computers

Original components but not the original case and the original computer was still working to the day of the upgrade [except hdds].  got the original parts on 4/3/2008.  first progression

CPU upgrade

WAS: Intel Q6700 2.67GHz/8MB/1066Mhz

NOW: Intel QX9650 3.00GHz/12MB/1333Mhz  OC'd 3.8GHz

GPU upgrade

WAS: 2 XFX GeForce 9600 GT Extreme 512MB in SLI

THEN: [there was a GTX260 tryout.  no bueno]

THEN: 2 EVGA GeForce GTX 560Ti 2GB in SLI

NOW: EVGA GTX 1080 Founders edition. theBomb! [card has only just been put in. this is its second day running]

PSU upgrade

WAS: ULTRA 650W original that came with the case.

NOW: Corsair AX760 very nice and quite with smart fan.

EVGA nForce 780i SLI mobo still the base.

Also during this time moved to different cpu cooler for better [or so i expected] CPU temps for OC which I had stable @3.6GHz.  but the cooler fans were really loud.

It was requested after this upgrade we make it a much quieter PC which caused me want to put ing a modern card with their better/quieter fans.  I did some research to see if PCI3.0 would work on a 2.0 board but always read that it didn't make big differences, and i had the founders as a spare card from a STRIX upgrade.

Long story short on quite is I removed all fans even on CPU cooler and just ran it yesterday and the CPU got up to 81C before i noticed it [on a MS Office install].  I shut down and realized the CPU cooling was first [duh].  the corsair cpu fans were removed from each side and cooler left in place because pain to get the cooler itself off or forgot when board was out.

put 2 Noctua fans back to back blowing down into the CPU heat sink.  BIOS smart fan to control fans by temp keep them off or incredibly low noise.  I stand the case on its front if you didnt notice.  When these CPU fans are set manually to 100% they kept the CPU temps in the low 40C's.

Pictures of most everything that went into and out of the upgrade.  dont even want to add it up.  my man cave battle zone upgrade coming as well.

Upcoming

New 1TB SSD install and I cant escape having a DVD.

Going to OC the CPU again as it is back to stock BIOS while new upgrades are stabilized.

just mount one of the rear fans on the cooler...

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

what do you figure the optimum nvidai card would be?  I would do some benchmarks to see what kind of difference it would make.  i used to have the GTX560ti in SLI but wanted to put in a quieter GPU and I had the founder from another project..  I will throw them back in to see what the difference might be.
