Laptop ram upgrade

Go to solution Solved by pwn_intended,

well you can only upgrade so long as your laptops aren't both running 2X2GB sticks of ram.

As long as the voltage of the ram sticks is the same (actually says on the sticks themselves) you should be fine and wouldn't need to re-format. UNLESS you are running 32-bit wondows, in which case you will need to install 64-bit so that your system can even see more than 4 GB.

Clarity: if the sticks are not the same voltage, DO NOT use them together. Reformatting only necessary if 32-bit windows is installed.

When in doubt, re-format.

So my brother has a laptop with 4gb ram ddr3, and I have an old laptop also with 4gb of ram ddr3. So if I use ram from my old laptop to upgrade my brother's one, will it damage anything or will I need to reinstall windows? And will it improve anything?

Do you know the detailed specifications of both pieces of RAM? If one is low powered and one is not then they won't work. If they're both strictly ddr3 then they will work but at whichever is lower speed and lower clocked .. given that the two pieces differ in only these aspects.
