Hello community,

I have a DSLR camera but no bag for it. I purchased the camera and completely forgot about getting the accessories for it and now I need to go through and buy them. I will be carrying one body, one lens and a few lens extenders as well as a few lens add ons. Future purchases may include a small telephoto lens and battery grip for the camera. I will be doing a lot of walking and travelling as well as riding my bike but I can bring my compact camera for bike rides. I am on a super tight budget and I am located in Australia, it's ok if it's an eBay listing as I often purchase things off there. Do any of you have recommendations for a camera bag the fits my needs?

Also another small question, can you also provide me, if you can, with a list or recommendations of some must have accessories for a DSLR.

Many thanks in advance

I suck a typing, preparw for typos.

Take your camera equipment to a store that sells camera bags, see which one fits your gear comfortably.  Lowepro, Tamrac, Kata, etc. all make very nice bags that are low cost.

Must have accessories: what do you plan to do?

As a basic set of gear in my bag, the most basic, I have a camera, a lens, a flash unit, a polarizer filter, spare batteries, and a microfiber cloth to clean the lens.

If I am going to take landscape photos, I have lenses for that purpose, a tripod, remote shutter release and a set of filters.

For portrait, I have portrait lenses, lights, reflectors.

I have tried that and they recommended multiple bags such as a backpack and a sling carry, all of which were over $200 (AUD if I may mention) I'm aiming for something under $50 AUD

I plan to do multiple things such as macros, wide shots, landscape and standard photos. I already have a tripod and am yet to order any further accessories.

What would you recommend, a side sling or backpack?

Which one do you find comfortable carrying?  I'm not the one who will be using the bag.  Think about the weight and how you will feel after walking around with the bag for an entire day.

I also don't recommend you buying a ONE bag that fits everything you have + will have in the future.  It makes for a big bag.  Buy a bag that fits enough of the gear you will take with you, and anything else that doesn't fit inside or you are not planning to take... leave it at home.

Personally I own a Fjällräven Kånken with a Photo insert (also sold by fjällräven to fit it perfectly). However I think you wont find it for 50, you can sometimes get a good deal and get it for under 80-100. I think you could consider it though as you will also get a good stylish everyday bag too.

I like both types of bags equally, and since I like to travel, a lot, I would like something that's can carry all my gear. I am considering a bag but I'm not sure whether it's worth the extra money paid. (eBay, sorry I'm a cheapie) Sling is for 15 but a backpack is around double. Backpack for ease of carry on international trips but it's is large, or sling for local carry but will have issues with "to bring or not to bring". Might invest in the sling but I'm still open to suggestions otherwise.

Thanks for for the help

Yeah, especially since I'm in Australia, it's going to be an absolute pain to find for under 100 let alone 50.

Thanks for suggesting though.

You can always find a bag you like at the store, mark down it's model or dimensions and look if anyone is selling the same or similar bag (either used or brand new for a lot less).

Camera bags are another personal choice.  I have about a dozen bags of various sizes and I switch between them depending on the amount of gear I take and where I am going.  Some bags, though I bought them at the time thinking they are useful, end up being used very little and I just treat them as storage cases.

Don't get a sling bag for that amount of gear, your back will be sorry. Weight distribution is important.

Yep, sling bags whether it's the messenger bag type of sling or the single shoulder backpack style, I only recommend it for people who carry one body and a couple of lenses.  Even then, a lightweight body rather than something as heavy as a D5 or 1D type of body.  Not just the back, but also the shoulder that has to support the weight will be sorry after an entire day with any heavy stuff.

There are some dual shoulder strap backpacks that are designed so that they also offer the quick access to gear like a sling back that swings around to the side or front.

My favorite bags are trolley bags, nice enough to carry a lot of gear without ever hurting your back or shoulder.  But really not convenient or fast to take around compared to a backpack or shoulder bag.

For hiking and traveling, I prefer my MindShift Gear bags.  Enough room to carry a DSLR + lens in the waist bag, and the backpack can carry water bottles, spare clothes, other essentials and perhaps an extra lens or two.

A few things that might come in handy for macro,
Macro tubes/filters

remote trigger
a flash unit(ringmount prefered) like the amaran halo

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

Ok, I'm guessing I can just get a sling for now and if I happen to find spare cash and buy dedicated macro and telephoto lenses I will most likely be able to afford a full camera backpack.

Yeah I'm figuring I won't get much out of going overkill with a full camera bag just yet. A messenger will do just fine for a year or so til I can afford more lenses. Yeah I have attempted searching stores and I have been wallet hurt at every offer so online shopping seems to be my last resort.

By the way, have you considered buying just a camera bag insert and using any backpack or other bag you have at home that is large enough?

Inserts are not that expensive, and you can adapt almost any large enough bag.

Lesson one - there is no perfect bag

you probably need a few different ones for different kinds of loads

that said generally you can find a bag fit for "most" use cases, like my lowerpro messenger 30 fits my A7, 28-75 f2.8, 50 f1.7, 70-210 f4, video mic, video light, peak design strap, and a few batteries and cards, as well as a tablet
