G-sync really worth it?

G-sync monitors are kinda expensive.... So, I was wondering if anybody who has one, but previously had a high refresh rate monitor, noticed any significant difference. Either would be an improvement for me. I would say my budget is aimed anywhere under 400$ US. 1080p is fine as long as it has high refresh, and 1ms response (doubt I could find anything higher than 1080p, and all those other things for under 400$ tho...). Thank you for any and all suggestions. I will probably make my purchase on cyber monday, unless I see a great deal online before then.

Don't worry too much about gtg response time. I would suggest getting 1440@60 or 120hz monitors so that they'll last you a little longer

G-Sync is nice but it is not really worth $200 extra if you can constantly push 144Hz because at that point tearing is not that noticeable. Throwing $200 into better GPU would be better idea.

However if tearing really bothers you then go for it, just be aware that there are issues with G-Sync if you want to run multiple monitors and using games in windowed/borderless mode.

I just hate using v-sync all the time.... But yea, might go for a higher res one with 144hz, rather than a 1080p with g-sync. Also, every time I have tried to quote someone in the post, its just quotes my original post instead.... im confused.

I'm not sure if I follow, so you already have 144 Hz monitor and you're wondering about upgrading to 144 Hz gsync? If so, upgrading only because gsync would make no sense imho.

 

Also, people that went from 144 Hz to 144 Hz gsync aren't the only one that can help you. With many 144 Hz gsync monitors, you can run them at 60/120/144 hz with and without gsync as well, so you can often try out all those scenarios on only one monitor.

 

But back to your ultimate question. Let's start with clarifying what gsync is meant for. It's for those situations, when your fps drops below your refresh rate which creates fairly nasty stutter. It's simply because 50 frames fits in 60 refresh cycles, so there will be fairly large gaps. But what if you're running at 144 Hz? The gaps will be naturally smaller, therefore much less noticeable stutter. Personally, I find the difference at 144 Hz with gsync on and off very minimal, and maybe only more visible with sudden drops. Therefore I don't think gsync is that important on 144 Hz panels, and especially not if you have to pay like extra $200 only for the gsync... I find gsync truly game-changing only on panels that are 60 Hz or so and hard to run - therefore 4K, 1440p ultrawides or 1440p with more budget graphic cards. It really does wonders on 60 Hz panels compared to 60 Hz with no gsync.

 

And besides this main use, you can use the gsync as vsync as well - it naturally caps the frames too. But I'm not sure how that works - there's should be automatically vsync on I believe, plus there are some scenarios where you can run it uncapped. So I'm just saying that yes, you can use this nicely "instead" of the vsync as well.

Currently 60hz lg monitor is what I am using. I was just weighing my 2 options of purchase, that were within my price range. I am just trying to narrow it down between a 1440p monitor with a preferably higher refresh rate (120-144hz would be fine), as opposed to a 1080p monitor with g-sync. I like the Asus ROG Swift 24' Monitor, but I was thinking downsizing would be kinda annoying... I like the 180hz refresh rate though.
