I build a new computer about 3-4 months ago (https://pcpartpicker.com/b/7g8KHx), well even from the beginning i have had a slow drive but i never thought nothing of it until a few weeks after i heard a grinding from the PC, thought i was my watercooler since different people reported the kraken x61 pump grinds a bit but goes away. I got more and more concerned when programs would not even open and if they did they were extremely slow, i ran crystaldiskmark and here are my results https://gyazo.com/3fc746d929a4b5a1527efc7d65dacca3. Any help is appreciated

What OS are you using? Plug in an external drive or plug another drive into your SATA/PATA connector on your motherboard.

Win 10 go to settings then go to update and security then select back up.

Win 8/8.1 same thing

Win 7 go to my computer right click the drive you want to back up, click properties, click back-up.

MacOS X go to Time Machine and click Back-up.

Linux I recommend Rsync.

Your disk is probably dying m9. =[

In windows I recommend you go to the command line and type CHKDSK /R

Looks like some sectors have errors. The drive is likely fine, but the file system has to be remade.

Y and restart and let it work. It will check the disk for any errors and bad sectors/clusters then repair them. May take a couple of mins. It will also display a detailed log of what it finds.

Um... did you just ask why you should make a backup?... OK. Today's PC lesson: backup anything you cannot live with losing.

Let's assume that grinding noise was your hard drive indicating hardware failure.

If you don't have a backup and that HDD fails, it's going to get very expensive to recover data.

Even if your hard drive isn't failing, you should always have a backup in case of fire, flood, theft, or hardware failure in the future.

You would backup to something like an external USB HDD or Network Attached Storage box, using backup software.

Ideally, a good backup follows the 3, 2, 1 Backup Rule: 3 copies of your data, in at least 2 geographical locations, 1 of which is offsite.

This means you could have 2 USB External HDDs for backups. You'd rotate using these drives, backing up every week or whatever works for you.

One drive you'd keep at your house (or a neighbors house) in a safe place, and the other you could store in a Safe Deposit box at the bank.

You will need the serial number off your hard drive, check the documentation that came with your HDD or look on the physical drive to see it labeled SN.

Go here to see if its covered under warranty and if it is file an RMA on their site and follow their directions.

Your drive has bad sectors that cannot be saved. You will have to "clean" the drive through diskpart.

I figured it may not have helped. It sounds to me like the HDD is having mechanical issues and is causing the grinding you hear. The spindle is hitting the platters where it is supposed to be barely hovering over them. Eventually this will destroy the read/write functions of the drive because the platters will be damaged. I would check to see if the warranty is still valid and if so RMA it. I put some directions in one of the comments in this post. Before you ship it off if you even can, create a back-up and get a new drive for your PC and restore it with your back-up.

If there were bad sectors the log would have told him that there were bad sectors after the chkdsk had finished its run. Even if the repair failed it would have notified the user.

Chkdsk sometimes isn't able to fix the sectors.

Create a backup first before you use the diskpart function in command line.

To clean the drive in diskpart.

Go to the command line and type 'diskpart'

Type 'list disk'

Type 'select Disk X'

Type clean

Command prompt will tell you it has finished and now the drive can be re partitioned.

To re partition a disk you go to the disk management utility. Just type disk management in the search or go to the control panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Left hand site click Disk Management. Right click the disk that is un-formatted and click format. (Usually black and labeled as such) Follow wizard.

I doubt this will help but if you wanna give it a shot I could be completely wrong on my assessment.

EDIT: Just found this nifty guide by Seagate on how to use DISKPART. Pretty detailed. Better than my super summed up version.
