Im just wondering has anyone tested using a GPU on a PCIe X4 slot.

I have this motherboard https://www.asus.com/nz/Motherboards/M5A97/specifications/

And I have a 3GB version of the GTX1060

Im thinking about moving my GPU to the lower PCIe slot so it is further from the CPU heatsink but I'm not sure if a GPU needs all 16 PCIe lanes.

The benchmarks and tests I have found online show no difference between 16 and 8 but they are all old, I can't find anything with the 10 series GPU.

It's last generation, but they went down as far as PCIe 1.1 x4.

tl;dr - You need to go to PCIe 1.1 x8 or below with modern cards before performance starts hurting badly

I did it with my first computer several years ago that had a core2duo and a 9800GTX+. It did not hurt on that setup, but that 9800 was so much slower, i think its clock speed was 900MHz

The gpu being close to the cpu won't hurt anything.

The reason is when summer hits, I might need to add fans to my cooler master z600. if I put one on the bottom it won't have much clearance from the GPU. If i put one in front it has to be a 90mm fan because of the heatsinks.
