I have a fx4300 and am upgrading my gpu to a RX 470/480. On paper the fx6300 is 15%ish faster (from userbenchmarks.com) When I look at live fps comparisons in the games I care about, (the witcher 3 & skyrim remastered) I only see a 3 ish fps difference. Is the fx-6300 worth the cost?

no. save your money and dont waste it on a current or older amd cpu. hold out for zen or for an intel upgrade. just not worth it at this time

Well, it's got three modules compared to FX-4300 two so it is faster only in terms of multithreading, even by up to 50% in tasks that use all the cores, singlethreaded-wise it's the same.  But if you want to play Skyrim, I suggest you get an Intel CPU, they just work better in that game.

If changing your entire platform is out of the question, an FX-6300 would be a decent upgrade that would heavily reduce bottlenecking of RX 470/480 that your current 4300 will cause.

AIO: Corsair H150i Pro RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB 3600MHz DDR4 Case: Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic PSU: Corsair RM850x White

Thanks for the advice. I currently have a r7-250 so when I upgrade, it will be better regardless. I'll see how the 4300 works for now though I believe that I will have an upgrade in my CPU before next summer.

Well, I had an overclocked Athlon X4 750K (4,5GHz) paired with a GTX 970 for a short while which is essentially the same in terms of what you want to run. The Athlon X4 750K is basically identical in terms of performance to the FX-4300 and the RX 470 is around 6% slower than a GTX 970 while the RX 480 is 7% faster.

And I can tell you, in The Witcher 3 for example the bottleneck was very significant, especially in locations like Novigrad.

FX8120 is the least I would consider and upgrade maybe worth it depending on the pricing.

Best would be i5-6500 to notice the difference.

May I ask what kind of fps approximately you got? I can live with a 40-60 fps range. -Thanks again

Oh it's been over a year since that time... I remember that it was good in open-area environments cause they're not as CPU-intensive, however once I entered Novigrad, Bloody Baron's "castle" or bigger cities in Skellige the FPS dropped quite heavily resulting in stuttering due to CPU maxing out at 100% usage across all cores.

I'd overclock the FX-4300 if I were you and get the GPU, and then start gathering money for a platform upgrade (CPU+motherboard+RAM)

Sounds like a good plan. Thank you for helping to clarify the situation. :)

The CPU might still limit the GPU despite the overclock, but it shouldn't be that terrible :) You're welcome, I'm glad to help
