I'm aware the 1080 is poor value, but I intend to play at 4K. Would it make that much of a differnce over a 1070. I'm ok with turning settings down to high or playing at 40-50 fps.

Edit: I plan to upgrade within the next 2 years if not sooner (Perhaps even after Volta).

for now it will definitely suit you there. but who knows where games will be 3 years from now. if you plan to keep the card or don't want to SLI in the future a 1080 is probably worth consideration.

I proably should have made it clearer, but I plan to upgrade within the next 2 years if not sooner (Possibly shortly after Volta).

I guess it depends on if you want 4k now, and if you already have a 1070. I would be tempted to just add another 1070 as it will be cheaper than a 1080 and offer a lot of performance, provided you can dump the heat, handle a little extra power consumption and are prepared to accept a few games won't offer SLI support.

No, I do not already own a 1070. I wouldn't bother making this thread otherwise, I would have to pay $800 AUD just to get 20% more performance, not worth it.

Two 1070's are more then a 1080 total and only work in a select games that have sli support. Even with sli the edge still goes to the 1080 for constancy.

Hence why i said "it depends on if you want 4k now and if you already have a 1070" If the OP has a 1070 I wouldn't recommend a 1080 as an upgrade, the 2nd 1070 would be less and offer quite a bit more at 4k.

If its a choice between 1070/1080 as a single card upgrade with no other 1xxx series then i agree, it wasn't clear in the original post

If it helps, 4K on a 1080 (not overclocked) is amazing. Playing gta v and Witcher 3 with high preset and aa turned off. No idea what the fps is as I don't bother measuring it but it looks and feels awesome.

Love not hate
