Hello, I got an iPhone 4s that turned out to be activation locked. I was wondering if I could bypass it by jail breaking the phone. Will that work?

Thanks,

No. Only the owner of the iCloud account can unlock it.

"Just got an iPhone 4s" 99% sure activation locks are enabled by the person who owns the phone when it gets stolen.....

an activation lock is when you sign in to an iphone using apple ID. Then reset the phone without signing out.

" Activation Lock, found within Find My iPhone, is a new feature in iOS 7 that makes it difficult for anyone else to use or sell your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you ever lose it. Even if you erase your device remotely, Activation Lock can continue to deter anyone from reactivating your device without your permission."

You either:

  • Stole the phone.
  • Got sold a stolen phone.
  • Got sold a legitimate phone, but the owner was a dick and locked it.

If it's the second or third thing, since the seller didn't exactly do something legal, seek the help of law enforcement to get your money back.

Though judging by the way you are wording your posts, the one who LE should be going after is probably you.

Yeah, you aren't getting to use it. Tough luck.

I didn't steal anything. I got it from a friend for $2 the front and back are completely shattered. He got it from someone who sold him a bundle of 3 iPhones. one was activation locked. They guy he bought them from claimed it was their daughters old phone. I would appreciate it if you wouldn't accuse me of stealing things.

Thanks,

As much as you are right, you are also WRONG. Activation lock does not need to be "triggered" by the person who may or may not own it.

As soon as you sign into iCloud and enable FMiP, activation lock is enabled. You must go to iCloud.com to deactivate it.

If you reset an iPhone, first thing it will do is ask you to sign in with the Apple ID associated with it. It does not need to be flagged as lost or stolen or anything.

If I reset my iPhone right now, I would have to know the iCloud details just to use it, even though it's mine and hasn't been flagged as stolen or lost.

Source: I used to work with people trading in or handing in broken iPhones.

Alright, sorry if I offended you, but what I quoted here still sounds 100% like all three of those phones are stolen. How and why would anyone sell 3 iPhones in a bundle like that? Anyone legitimate would put them online one by one, since iPhones sell at a significant price.

I don't know. What I will probably do is find a super cheap iphone 4s with a working motherboard and swap it with my activation locked one. Because I think it would be cool to have a old iphone I can use as an mp3 player. It will be an upgrade to my iphone 3gs.
