i7 4790K will do nicely and it's not too expensive. Overclocks nicely with DH-14, you can easily get 4.6Ghz without water. Speaking from experience.

Almost no difference between DDR3 and DDR4.

10% difference between 6700K.

i5 is just a name. 6600k is quad core that's NOT hyperthreaded and it's just clocked slightly lower.

 

Get a K version to OC in the future, or even right away.

 

Studying Computer Games Development at Uni right now, and 4790K was and still is doing ultra well.

What games do you play and what are the rest of your system specs? I would probably say the i5 is all you need.

i5 is all you need. Unless you are doing rendering or some other multi threaded workload, the performance difference is fairly negligible.

i5. 6600K or wait for new one.

 

You could perhaps look into a better used CPU like i7 4790K and good 1150 mobo.

Think a I5 is good enough for your current needs. But do go with a unlocked variant. If you would go like a 1080 range of performance GPU in the future, the I7 might be worth it.

  1. I'd say the i5 is fine and that way you have some cash to save for that new GPU. Programming isn't really all that intensive on the cpu, unless you're doing scientific computing or huge database manipulation, etc.. for C# and Unity, if you have enough RAM a bigger cpu won't make much of a difference IMHO.
