Separate Graphics Card for Second Moniter

So my friend is giving me his old monitor and it only has a VGA port.  I have a 1070 hooked up to my main monitor, but as you probably know, the 1070 doesn't have a VGA port. I still have my old graphics card laying around (9800gt) and that does have a VGA port. Could i just shove that in a spare PCIE slot and have it power the second monitor or would that cause problems?

You can just put anouther gpu in, but no reason to, your just wating power.
