i have a seagate external hard drive - that has a samsung spinpoint 2000LM003 2tb hdd in it - suddenly it stopped working - before, sometimes it would work if i moved it around and put it vertically or horizontally - I don't know if it's the sata adapters issue or the hdd - no clacking sounds in the hdd except for startup - also, the disk sounds like it's spinning fine

"Siri, find me the nearest funeral home."

"I have found several locations, the closest is twenty meters away. Would you like to navigate to the "Trash"?"

"Yes, please"

Clicking indicates that the actuator has become worn and is struggling to work. No clicking would mean that the spindle has worn down. My suggestion is to find a professional who can get the data off. The other choice is getting it to function and backing everything up.

Edit: I would also check the SATA power or data cables.

Hi there :)

What is the external drive's model? What but are you using to connect the drive to the PC (SATA to USB, simple USB or other type of cable)?

Clicking sounds are typically a sign of a problem in the drive and it is suggested to back your data up ASAP and then replace the drive. Have you checked your drive's S.M.A.R.T. data? I would recommend using some diagnostic tools from the manufacturer and see if the drive is detected and if it passes those tests.

Using different cables, ports and testing the drive on another computer is also a good idea.

Feel free to ask if you have any additional questions!
