I need help choosing a hard drive and later down the road an ssd. I'm building my first gaming pc and so far I bought:

  • gigabyte ga-z170x
  • 16gb ddr4
  • 650w psu
  • phanteks enthoo pro case

I have my eyes set on the i5 6600k and MSI's 1060 6gb gpu.

I've tried researching different hdd's only to get overwhelmed (sad, I know). I want something that's "fast", reliable and around 1tb. My budget is about $150usd.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm new to all this so I only have a vague idea of what I'm doing.

Thank you

You can get both your SSD and HDD for that.

Get a WD Blue, and Samsung 850 EVO 250GB.

Or if you don't need a ton of storage, get a 500GB SSD. That's what I'd do.

I'm probably going to need more than 500gb. Thanks for replying.

i agree with the others in that you should get an ssd as it is a huge improvement. check out this pny one as many people really like the performance on it and it beats the kingston and sandisk oprions by a lot. https://www.amazon.com/PNY-CS1311-120GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B019H3B3OW?th=1&ref_=nav_custrec_signin&

as for the hard drive just go with any of the reputable brands such as wd, seagate, toshiba, hitachi, hgst

beware of the wd blue series, the 1tb is really nice but the higher capacities are slower at 5400rpm ans would reccomend going for other hdds for above 1tb

should be able to get the WD black for that budget & a SSD

The Black is rather pointless over the Blue.

i dont think so. iv owned both. with blue your getting the crap ones; 2 year warranty vs 5 year warranty.

Not at all true, but ok. Also warranty doesn't mean a whole lot, if the drive has lasted past 2 years, there's slim chance that it'll die within the 5.

They also only warranty the drive, not what's on it.

They're also the same speed.

Warranty means the confidence the manufacturer has in its product, to me that means a whole lot because they do test their shit before committing to a 5 year warranty. WD has less than half the confidence in the blue drive than it does black, 2 vs 5 year should be a no-brainer. Its not worth putting your data on cheap drives when you can get ones that last over twice as long for a little bit more money. My WD blue died years ago; my other WD drives (black, RE, and Red) are still going.
