I currently am an intern with my college at like a student-driven research center. I guess that's the best way to describe it. I have the option to get a paid position next semester but I have to put forward a project to work on. It was fun working here and I would like to come back again. I would like a few suggestions on what I should do. They should generally pertain to digital forensics or cybersecurity. I just need a few ideas to push me in the right directions.

Current System: CPU - I5-6500 | Motherboard - ASRock H170M-ITX/ac | RAM - Mushkin Blackline 16GB DDR4 @ 2400mHz | GPU - EVGA 1060 3GB | Case - Fractal Design Nano S | Storage - 250GB 850 EVO, 3TB Barracuda | PSU - EVGA 450W 80+ Bronze | Display - AOC 22" 1080p IPS | Cooling - Phanteks PH-TC12DX_BK | Keyboard - Cooler Master QuickFire Rapid(MX Blues) | Mouse - Logitech G602 | Sound - Schiit Stack | Operating System - Windows 10

The OG System: I3-2370M @ 2.4 GHz, 750GB 5400 RPM HDD, 8GB RAM @1333Mhz, Lenovo Z580 Laptop (Ubuntu 16.04 LTS).

Peripherals: G602, AKG 240, Sennheiser HD 6XX, Audio-Technica 2500, Oneplus 5T, Odroid C2(NAS).

create your own code for gas chromatography? Spectrometry?

To where it creates the molecular formula and displays the compound itself after comparing to a known database of average molar masses of known illicit compounds.

You'd be rich after making it

Shipping sucks

I would do that project but I feel like you would find it, re-word it and claim it as your own. You would all the money and not me.

The word 'cybersecurity' makes me think of... the way to improve IoT security.

The most important issue about IoT apparently is its protection from outside attacks.

They did say we could work and try to improve upon previous projects....

This already exists.

Costs tens of thousands of dollars and would be bought with a gas chromotography machine. If you can afford a HLPC, or mass spec machine you could afford the software as well they are usually $100,000USD or more, crazy expensive.

 •E5-2670 @2.7GHz • Intel DX79SI • EVGA 970 SSC• GSkill Sniper 8Gb ddr3 • Corsair Spec 02 • Corsair RM750 • HyperX 120Gb SSD • Hitachi 2Tb HDD •

already done by a long time, the software exists and the databases to, the sad part though you are never able to get a 100% match in practical analytical chemistry.

Is one of your older projects maybe capable of being improved somewhere or having some (small) theoretical issues that you can work out?

Like holy shit could you imagine a whirlpool but like it changes every day so a future super computer would need to crack it for every day...

Jesus christ that'd last awhile I'd imagine.

you are thinking in the direction of ancient encryption used in the first and second world war, they where using systems back then that would change the way they worked and had to be decrypted everyday, meaning that the decrypting side needed to have it's own translation manual containing all possible different start points. even if you add useless junk data, you would still be stuck to the same repeating start/ending sequence, which is a pattern, which is not what you want.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

Well whens the last time the idea was revisited? I'd imagine using todays technology and new encryption methods it'd be worth a shot atleast for a research project.

Edit:  Like for example changing the way a file system works to automatically detect when a file was created and encrypt it, so you aren't looking for the snippets in the front and back of the file, it would require any receiving computer to also use the same system but it might provide enhanced security for localized file storage.

not really, these days things get encrypted at one end and the data is then sent towards the receiver while the key is sent through a different route(simple SSL explanation) making it hard to intercept, yet fairly light and simple to use.

other encryption methods depend on reshuffling the original key a certain amount of times and display the shuffled outcome, only the same program knows how to put it back together correctly and the person that gave the input for it.
We are way beyond the idea of daily changing codes manually(atleast in the digital compartment) modern day algorithms take a proper government owned supercomputer a few months to crack it. in the same time you can have some people of your intelligence department find the guy that knows the code, catch him, drug him and beat him until he gives the information, for far less money.
Besides the best place to hie these days is in the open, there are so much normal chatter services like SMS or simple mobile phone calls that it is nearly damn impossible to find the source or target, remember the IS attacks on france? they had contact through normal, not encrypted SMS services, the type that is tapped by NSA and all the other agencies, so far the use of encryption.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.
