They said not to start flame wars between apple and windows and amd - intel or amd nvidia

this is thinkpad vs macs for professionals

Which one do you think is the best for the price point and please give a thorough explanation

Edit - based on performance for price - you can factor in things like screen, build quality etc.

just want some pros and cons for each

That depends on what you're up to, and what you value in your computer.

For anyone in design & arts, I'd be looking at Apple. For everyone else, Thinkpad.

how did you get a 4790k to 5ghz? what voltage and multiplier?

1.35v, 50. Fine for gaming, rendering, general use (~65-75 degrees). Thermal throttles using Prime95 on small FFT.

Have you used the Mac Trackpad? It's actually good. I swear I'm a pointing stick noob. I have no idea how people are so accurate with them.

I can't stand trackpads since you have to take your hand off the keyboard to use it. The pointing stick can be used by right index and left thumb for click.

The screen on the MBP is far better than anything you'll find on the ThinkPad lineup. If you're using an external monitor 100% of the time, then it won't matter though.

You do know that you can get QHD IPS screens on some thinkpads right? Also The MBP  screen isn't that good, when we talk color accuracy, I think they are around the 70% in sRGB. A ThinkPad W541 with the 3k screen has 90% sRBG, but no pro would ever use the screen on a macbook or a thinkpad, because they are shit compared to what they really need.

Have you seen the screens that they use for editing movies? They can cost 10k USD with no problem and are true 10bit.

Buddy... I wasn't talking about resolution. The new Macbook Pro supports the DCI-P3 colour space, which means that it is 125% sRGB.

You also wouldn't edit video, particularly video for movies so your point is moot (i'm struggling to see Finding Dory being rendered on a 13" MBP) - but you're right, if you were in the creative space and desk bound you'd probably be using another screen. 10bit support wouldn't matter in this case though as I'm pretty sure macOS only supports 8bit anyway, not that this really matters unless you're editing a lot in gray scale.

-edit- since El Capitan it supports 10bit space-

well people often talk res when they talk MBP screen. hmm did not see that they got DCI-P3, that is neat,  but not going to matter for people who makes movies and such.

Well I have seen a few pro people use a MBP 15 for short "movies" and such. I don't even think the new macbooks has a use case for real pro people, ofc you can argue that a youtuber is a pro, but I am talking about big companies and such.

El Capitan and newer should have 10bit support and yes 10bit matters a lot for people who makes movies and such. The only pro people I have seen using a Macbook was so they could code for it or they just like the OS more.

macOS strangely has advantages for coders due to its native Linux environment... hadn't thought of that.

when I was talking about digital content creation, I was talking about graphic designers and photographers rather than video editors as they'd end up with a Mac Pro or something similar. A laptop just isn't going to cut it for those power users, be it a MacBook or ThinkPad.

Graphic designers would also like 10bit, since it gives them better darks, so it becomes closer to real life.

A laptop would work fine for people who do commercials and short movies, I have seen plenty of those people with a ThinkPad or a older MacBook Pro 15.

I don't really see a reason for a photographer to get a the new macbook pro, since they lack SD card slot, they often want bigger screens and no Apple made photo program. I Think it just comes down to prefference if they go with a MacBook over a windows.

SD card slot on the MBP has never hurt me, most of the stuff I shoot is CF, not SD anyway and no laptop that I've seen has a CF slot.

I wouldn't get the new MBP based on the fact it has 4x USB-C ports, so nothing that I have would work without adapters... Once the Type-C ecosystem matures, I'd consider it.

10bit doesn't give better blacks... But it does give you more colours to work with, so you won't have stepping etc on your gray scale. You would have approx ~950,000,000 more colours to work with (256x256x256 vs 1024x1024x1024 in the RGB colour space)

To be clear, 10bit is preferable any day of the week over 8bit but not always necessary. The new panels on the MBP are 10bit... Just FYI.

Ohhhh interesting. These new panels seem dope. Yea but the shitty keyboard and 4 USB-C annoys me. The price too. The touch bar seems gimmicky as hell. Give me physical buttons and remappable keyboard anyday. I can just map shortcuts to physical keys instead of relying on the touch bar
