4GB vs 8GB

Right now for 1080p gaming, 4gb. is enough and you shouldn't see less fps than an 8gb. version. If you want to be future proof for 1440p, the 8gb. 480 will be very helpful. But you shouldn't be getting a 480 for 1440p anyway

To add to this:

  • Resolution is often the biggest VRAM eater next to texture quality. Since the GPU is mostly suited for 1080p gaming, the VRAM requirement drops.
  • I've been looking at texture quality differences in games and I'm finding it difficult to justify using the max quality settings over the one below it. For some reason in some games, max texture quality adds 1GB of VRAM consumption, which can blow up the VRAM requirement easily by 25%, but it doesn't improve the image quality all that much.

I'm thinking of getting an RX480 and the 4GB version is £50 ($60) less than the 8GB version. My question is whether the 8GB version is actually worth that much more or whether I should just buy the 4GB one.

Thanks.

yes. It will be worth it in a few years.

$60 is a lot, I would just go 4GB and stick to 1080p for another 3 years and then upgrade to a newer GPU.

Oh that's another thing I only have a small-ish 1080p Monitor so super realistic graphics aren't that noticeable really. Sorry I forgot to mention that

Unless you want to run crossfire, go for 4gb and save your dough.

If the games you want to play use a huge amount of vram, like shadow of mordor, the 8 gb will be of good use, if the games been well optimized the 4gb will be fine for a while. vram is one of those things that don't really matter until you run out and it has to start caching to system ram and fps falls to the floor
