Gaming/Video Build Help

I'm looking to create either an AMD based or an Intel based computer for around $800 without windows, a cd drive, or any peripherals like a monitor or keyboard. This PC will be used for medium-serious 1080p 60fps gaming, mid to heavy multitasking, and an occasional video render (although I don't really mind waiting a tad bit longer for a render).

Intel Build:

If you have any suggestions on this to change, please feel free to tell me but I don't really want to push over $850

General Notes (in no particular order):

-I'm looking for future upgradability

-I don't care about power consumption at all because I don't pay the power bills lol

-I don't care too much about temps as long as I don't fry my components

-I don't mind if the parts have an ugly color scheme or if they don't match. I just want my case to look kind of minimalistic but I'd really play CSGO than stare at my motherboard.

-The AMD compatilble boards use PCI-e 2.0, although I don't think this will be a problem because it's been shown over and over that PCI-e 2.0 vs 3.0 doesn't really affect in game FPS at all

-The WLAN card is a must for me, I don't really have ethernet access

-I'm wiling to give up the SSD but I'd heavy prefer to keep it

-I'm looking to overclock decently often

-The DDR3 vs DDR4 isn't too much of a concern to me, it's kind of been proven it doesn't affect much of anything

Yeah go with intel even though FX 8350 might be better a bit but not worth it since you can't upgrade it at all. While 6100 can still go to i5 6500 or i7 6700

Also no need for a z170 mobo on a non k cpu

I would still stick with Intel for this as it is much easer to upgrade to an i5/i7. I would try to opt for the 6Gb 1060 or a 4Gb 470/480 as it doesnt have enough VRAM.

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

id go with an intel I5 build, something like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/jqLrm8

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Would an intel i3-6100 or a non k i5 overclock well on a non z170 motherboard?

It will work but is a total waste of money. And no you can not do that unless use a blck method which is not worth it

3GB frame buffer should probably be okay for 1080p gaming to be honest. I'm not going to be running like any mods at all and I'm more concerned with base clock speed so I think a 3gb 1060 is ok

Are you saying that z170's are a waste of money and that you can overclock fine on h170's? What you wrote was a bit unclear..

Is there like any difference in performance or length of life on a "mini itx" 1070? I've never really heard of one before I'm just curious. Also, that connects via the standard PCI-e 3.0 right (just making sure lolol)

it just has one fan , but it works the same otherwise. cooling might slightly worse though . It just happened to be the cheapest one . If you want to spend a few more bucks on a better cooler , then i recommend this one https://pcpartpicker.com/product/4XyxFT/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-1070-8gb-windforce-oc-video-card-gv-n1070wf2oc-8gd

Will a full sized 1070 fit in that case? Is it the build you're using right now? Also, does overclocking work ok on that processor and do you ever run into bottlenecks caused by that CPU?

1_ just checked compatibility ,it should fit , but you might need to remove the drive bays. If you don't want to deal with that , here's an updated build using the full size card and a case that supports it :http://pcpartpicker.com/list/D9TWf8

2_ No , i'm currently using an i7 3770k and 2 r9 290x's  , but those parts are all highly rated if that's what you're asking .

3_ No , it doesn't , at least not that i know of .

4_It most likely won't be an issue. i5 6500 is a capable chip .

Thanks for the replies. Also, do you need a semi-modular PSU or will a EVGA 500B non-modular work just fine. Looks like an easy way to save $50

no one ever needs a modular psu . It's just more practical to cable manage because you can remove unnecessary cables instead of stashing them wherever .

the 500B works fine.

If you don't mind can I ask you why you changed your motherboard from an h110 in the first like to a b150 in the second link? Does one have features over the other?

wait did i ? I though i had changed it to the b150 in both links ... the main advantage of b150 is the extra 2 ram slots which come in handy if you plan on adding more ram one day.

I originally considered the h110 platform because of the cost , but you'd have to sacrifice dual channel ram and would get no room for expansion.

Just as a side note, could I realistically buy an of those parts used? I certainly won't buy the gpu used, but what about stuff like the CPU or PSU?

you can definitely buy the psu used , as well as the case , and potentially the ssd (but i wouldn't ). Cpu is still too new to realistically be on the used market , and even if it is prices won't be good. If you want you can look for older haswell parts ( iX 4XXX ) , but that needs a different board and ram , and all depends on what deals you can get in your area.

Ok so I can't really find much of anything used. Do you think that if I used an i3-6100 I'd end up severly bottlenecking the 1070?
