Hi,

I'm new to this whole PC building business and would really appreciate any opinions on how to improve my first build. But first here's some of my requirements and what I intend on doing with my PC after it's finished.

Firstly my budget. I'd say it would be around £700-£800 GBP (Great British Pounds), where £850 would be my absolute limit although I would be very hesitant on going anywhere above £800.

Second, I'm mainly considering to use my PC for some gaming (titles such as Sid Meir's Civilization series, and 2K's Football Manager series), as well as some content creation. However, I don't see myself doing 4k anytime soon, so 1080p video editing is all I need for this rig. As for the software I'm going to use, I'm aiming to work my towards the Adobe Premier Pro CC, so it will be useful to be optimised for that seeing as I intend on using this rig for 5+ years, however for the mean time I intend on using some basic software. I'm also considering doing some animating on Blender.

Third, I'm most likely going to start with a single 1080p monitor but will look to go with a dual monitor setup then utilise one of LG's ultrawide curved monitors.

As for peripherals I'm going to start off with a standard cheap mouse but will look into a better one in the future, possibly an MX Master from Logitech? But any suggestions will be welcome! Keyboard will be fairly basic to start off with but again, any suggestions are welcome. I am going to install Window 10 on this PC.

I'm upgrading from a mid-2014 macbook pro and was looking for a very solid, but reasonably priced PC to last me for quite some time, again 5+ years would be ideal.

That's all the requirements and preferences I have with my new build. After some researching here's my initial PC configuration, with some parts missing (like the power supply) but please suggest any improvements on this setup. Where I've overspend and where I've underspent etc.

PC Config:
CPU: Intel i5-6500
RAM: Corsair CMK16GX4M2A2133C13 Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2133Mhz CL13 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit, Black
Case: Fractal Design Define R5 Computer Case
Motherboard: ASUS Z170-A Intel Skylake SLi/CrossFire ATX Motherboard - Black
GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1060 Windforce OC GV-N1060WF2OC-6GD Video Card

Storage: 1 250GB SSD and 1 1TB HHD
Power supply: I don't know.

I was also wondering whether the motherboard was a bit on the expensive side and I could maybe use the money elsewhere like on the Graphics or CPU although they both seem like quite solid choices to me. Also would I need to look into a wifi card? For sound should I look for a DAC like the Audioengine D1 Premium 24-bit DAC or a sound card?

Thanks!

don't need a z170 mobo with an non-k cpu, get a h110/b150/h170 mobo and try for an i7 6700/e3 1231v3 instead. rest are fine.  if you don't want to/cannot have an ethernet cable for your rig and you aren't too far away from your modem/router, then get a wifi card. onboard audio is fine.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

You have a Z170 motherboard with a locked i5, to overclock you need an unlocked K CPU. Otherwise get a H170/B150 motherboard to save money on a feature you dont need. As for the PSU, I recommend the EVGA 550W G2.

Please quote our replys so we get a notification and can reply easily. Never cheap out on a PSU, or I will come to watch the fireworks.

get a i5 6600k or get a h110/b150/h170 motherboard. CX450m/CX550m are some nice cheap(ish) semi modular power supplies to make cable management easier.

I think it would be better for content creation, like editing and rendering. somebody else could give more details.

I chose a i5 6600k instead of a i5 6500 because of the price difference, the i5 6500 is 190$ and the 6600k is only 210$.

No, a Xeon will preform exactly the same as an equivalent i5 or i7.

Xeon's have ECC support and don't have an iGPU, i5/i7's don't have ECC support but they do have an iGPU

So if I went with a i5-6600k instead of a i5-6500 the ASUS Z170-A would work but am I correct in assuming that it is a fairly pricy one?

Would I be better off with a MSI Z170-A PRO Intel Z170 S 1151 DDR4 ATX Motherboard or an MSI Z170A PC MATE ATX LGA1151 Motherboard and does it really matter which board I choose?

If you are buying an unlocked processor and plan on over clocking for more, then buy the Z170 board. The Asus one is a solid choice. If not then save cash on both the motherboard and processor and buy a nice mouse maybe? Or put the extra to a solid EVGA GS or G2 600W PSU.

If you are going with a unlocked CPU, you will need an after market cooler so I recommend the CM 212 Evo.

yes. your video editing would do much better with an i7/xeon instead of the i5, so get the i7/xeon instead. doesn't matter which board you choose as long as it has the features you need.
