Hi, I am new to After Effects and am just making stuff for myself. I am trying to import a logo that I made in Inkscape (like Illustrator but free) so I saved it as a PDF and imported it into AE. I created shapes from vector layer and it works fine. But I am trying to animate individual shapes and I cannot figure out how to do so. When I cut and paste the group/shape into a different layer, it loses its attributes (position and scale). Is there a way to separate each group/shape without it losing its attributes? I can give a link to my project if that will help. Thanks!

So all the shapes are in a single PDF file?  Sharing a zip folder with the project file and resources you are using for the project would be useful.

Here is a onedrive link. I am pretty sure you can download the zip file with it

Ok let me download and see how you're doing things.  I kinda have an idea of what you want to do, I just want to be sure.

OK I am having a problem with your Logo.PDF file.  I am using After Effects CC 2017, just updated yesterday, and every time I try to import your PDF file AE keeps crashing.

Can you do the following, I assume you will want to work in AE in a composition that has a 16:9 aspect ratio resolution (e.g. 1920x1080).

  1. Set the canvas in Illustrator to match the same size of the composition resolution you will use in AE.
  2. Position the shapes and layers in Illustrator they you want to position them in AE.
  3. Don't export the shapes that you drew in Illustrator as PDF, instead import the Illustrator .ai file directly into AE.

I guess you want to do something like this tutorial:

I'm also using After Effects CC. But I don't have Illustrator, though. Can you open the pdf in Illustrator and then export it in an .ai file? It should work because I used to use PDFs to transfer files from Inkscape to Illustrator and it worked. The PDF is also in the .aep file and so is a shape layer with all of the shapes and paths. Thank you for your time!

You only have a subscription for AE CC?  Not the full Adobe CC suite?  I'll see if I can extract vector graphics from the PDF file in Illustrator.
