well this is kind of awkward.....

i have build a lot of pc's and worked for a repair shop and need help planning a build.

since i started planing my new pc i am kind of torn on the cpu

at first i thought the e5-2630 v4 was as good choise and it tuns out it isnt that great for my usage goal............

 

well just to clarify what i intend of using it for

 

main VM's:

  1. powerful gaming and work VM
  2. secondary guest VM
  3. crypto-rendering VM

 

storage VM's

  1. backup
  2. archive
  3.  non redundant network storage

my plan is to intentionally give every VM its own network connection to comunicate, this might sound weird since it shares some resources, this is done to allow other clients to connect to there arcive etc.

some things are missing from this list like HDD storage, 

this is because they are not relevant for the cpu choise

 

 

its a wierd build becuase of one reason:

i need a lot of power, i want that power to actually look good on my desk and not in the server closet.

What OS? Id probably run centos, stable and will do all of this well.

 

 

CPU will be fine, but won't be great for games, Id probably get something like a 2667 or 2643, as that clock speed might be nice.

 

Why not get a server and run thin clients?

I have a similar gigantic build with dual E5-2680 V3's though (check my profile).

 

Is there any reason you are selecting the V4 specifically? If you want to game on it, I might suggest the "workstation" Xeon V3 processor The E5-2687W V3 (The W is for Work Station). It is 3.1GHz and can be found used for a decent price (since it's previous generation, but EXTREMELY capable).

 

It is a lot more clock speed which is good for games.

 

The E5-2667 V3 is also 3.2GHz (more than the 2687W V3) but only 8 cores. Forget the current generation of Xeons in my humble opinion. It's too much money for not much improvement in performance, stick to V3's and you will get the performance you need at lower costs.

for the VM hosting im still considering ether unraid or if necessary Vsphere altough the price is way to high for Vsphere

 storage vms are going to run a cusomized mint distro

 

and the reason not for choosing a virual swich is becouse of bandwith control i need over those VM's

vmware ESXI is free if you don't use vsphere.

 

Xen server is also a option and its free.

 

I don't see a reason to go unraid.

 

Im a sucker for centos.

 

You can control all of the network ports on a virtual switch in linux at least.
