So recently at my Job they were throwing away and older dell workstation with a 2nd gen i5 (2400). I pulled the CPU out and took it home thinking I could make a budget build. After a bit of research I found out that I can pair this CPU with a Z77 chip-set motherboard. The one unfortunate thing is that those motherboards are pretty pricey and hard to find.

So before investing some cash wanted to know if anyone on here has a i5 2400 CPU and what kind of performance are you getting out of it?

I'll be paring this CPU with a spare MSI GTX 970

Why didn't you also grab a motherboard from work? Also, you don't have to use a z77 board, you can use any lga1155 board (which you may be able to find cheaper).

I thought about this but the motherboard seems pretty garbage. Its off an old optiplex 990.

I still can grab the MOBO its literally outside my office lol

Grab it, it's fine. I would just take the whole system and then all you'd have to do is some case modding and maybe get a new psu.

well if you dont have the Mobo and ram i think you should just sell it for some cash. as i see no point on buying some old stuff to build around that 2400, they are rare and really pricey. no point to get an ancient mobo that cost like a modern z170

If you're getting it for free, go for it. If it does bottleneck the 970 as one poster stated, who cares? The PC cost you very little.

I'd go for it if you plan to use it as a backup.

I wouldn't buy a new motherboard. The Optiplex with it's RAM should be more than sufficient if it has 8GB. Add an SSD and you'll be golden.

I have a ton of extra DDR3 that i've gathered from retired PCs so i'll do that maybe buy a small chassis that would fit that mini ATX

2nd and 3rd generation non-K CPUs have a limited unlock which allows them to go 4 steps beyond boost frequency.  If you can adjust the multiplier (which is possible on Z77, perhaps on P67A too), that i5-2400 can be cranked up to 3.8GHz on all 4 cores.

I had my own i5-2500 at 3.8, and that had no issues pushing an SLI'ed pair of 770s (roughly the same performance as a 980ti) to their limit in GTA5.  So a 970 shouldn't be much of a problem in most games.

Thanks,

That was my suspicion. But i figured since i have the hardware laying around i might as well build a low-mid range PC

If i find an decently priced z77 ill think about buying it. I mean this will just be a spare gaming rig. specially how most of the hardware was free.

performs as well as an i3 6100, not a slouch by any means. If you start throwing 1080s at then yes, but that isn't the situation.

Z68/z77 boards are not cheap you are better off getting a newer i3 for the price you would pay for them. You can find cheap h61 boards for $40USD.

I'm going to use the board that was in the optiplex 990 not particularly thrilled but I'm sure it will be fine also thinking of sticking it in this sweet case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811353062

Thanks!

Its definitely not going to be playing triple A titles in 4k but it surely wont be a slouch!

I'm thinking of pairing it with some decent ram and an SSD for a small form factor MINI-RIG
