Skyrim SE on GTX 970, how's it going for you?

Automobili3XF

I tried to play Skyrim SE today on my rig, with a Xeon E3-1220v3 and a GTX 970.

I was optimistic when the game had set the graphical quality all the way up to max settings on 1080p.

But when i ran the game i noticed a very low performance, with FPS hovering around low-40s mid-30s.

Only on the lowest settings i was abble to run the game at smooth 60FPS, but that's not enough, and i have a feeling that this is not right.

Is the game supposed to be this hard to run? Or is it just buggy at the moment? How well is it running on your 970 rig?

I haven't got past the prologue yet, just in case it matters.

I've played it this weekend on my main rig listed in my signature. similar to your setup, it also auto set everything maxed, i was getting around 40-50fps average until i changed shadow distance & quality from ultra to high. Now it getting 50-60fps stable.

For contrast, I think its a driver issue. As I also have original Skyrim with 2k/4k texture mods installed along with about 20 other graphic enhancing mods for trees/grass etc. That has much much higher fidelity and runs around 70-80fps.

The game only launched, give a month to get a more mature driver.

your rig is powerful enough, must be a software issue

Actually yes but might not be necessary: Turn godrays to low or off it should do the trick. It just gobbles GPU even on my 1070 it can go below 60 at times because of godrays (though since never below 50 and my monitor can do 50hz I leave it at high)

What won't be necessary?

@Chevy_Monsenhor Why'd you agree with me?

Waiting for a patch: Godrays seriously kills performance so lowering it should yield pretty good framerates for your 970. Also godrays are unlikely to improve Gameworks stuff rarely improves much.

I've found Godrays in SSE to be fine, had no issues with on high them unlike in FO4.

I'm playing with V-sync off and framerate capped at 90, everything on ultra except shadow distance on high, getting anywhere from ~50-90FPS (average around 70) depending on whats going on in-game (usually drops around 50 with lots of enemies or spells on screen, not because of godrays). Running Noble Skyrim (HD textures) and SMIM.

So then there's definitively something going on with the OP's install.
