Internet cable possibly damaged?

Go to solution Solved by paddy-stone,

Are you using cable broadband or ADSL/VDSL?

It sounds to me like the junction box/master socket may have been damaged during the storm, and it would be best to get your ISP to check their equipment (which usually includes junction boxes/master sockets) and everything outside your home.

[edit] sorry I just re-read what you said earlier. Yes, it could be a cable that you're using was damaged, and it would be best to get another cable to test with before contacting your ISP as they usually charge for an engineer to visit the exchanges and then to check junction boxes/master sockets at your home premises(sp?)

I've noticed that in the last 2 months my internet connection was very, very slow.

I have changed the router and the cable (not the one the isp provided me with) and my internet connection is still slow. When I did speedtests, before the incident, my download speed was around 70 Mbps and now it struggles to reach 6 Mbps. Well, while downloading a torrent, it used to reach speeds of 5 Mbps avg and max 10 Mbps. Now I'm downloading with 500 kBps on avg and 700 kBps max.

It all happened during a storm after a lightning that was somewhere nearby. It took my motherboard with it. My router flashed repeatedly a few times with an odd sound at every flash. I don't know how to describe it.

Why I'm saying all this now? Because I only used the wi-fi and mobile data and there wasn't a major change in the internet speed for the things that I do. Not that my pc is back on its legs I'm noticing all of this.

Can the cable the isp provided me with be damaged?

Please excuse my English.

I've tested with the same torrent from the same site. And the results I've posted above.

Believe me or not, I'm not using a modem. I did, in the past. But the cable goes directly to the router. Never had a problem with this before. Yes, I am dumb.

Your ISP should be able to read out the signal quality to and from your (new) modem. If the signal itself is crap, and if there isn't a modem problem, they have to send a mechanic, and do a line check. If it's no faulth of your own, it "should" be free of charge.

When will people start to know the difference between a router, a switch and a modem.

torrent speeds vary greatly from torrent to torrent so don't use that as a metric of your internet speed/reliability.

This, could you tell us something else that isn't a torrent? Even if it is the same torrent, speed will be different depending on the number of peers and their upload speed

This is a signature.

How does this even work? The cable's "roots" are almost 100 meters away and stuck to the post/pillar/how you call it. I guess that I'll have to contact my isp and see if what you are saying is the problem.
