I can still use a freesync monitor if I have a geforce graphics card?

Andrew Waples

I guess what I am trying to say is that I won't be able to take advantage of freesync, but the monitor will still work right? Or should I get an AMD card to take advantage of free sync? What happens (if anything happens) when a geforce card is used on a monitor designed with AMD graphics cards? I'm planning on getting this build: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/c3Jqbj  The goals of this is 4k, "future proofing" and or minimal upgrades down the road; say in 5 years I'll have to upgrade something. However, my budget with this is between $1000-1500.

the card is meant for 1080p, why not go with a rx 480?

Yes. It'll still function as a monitor, you just won't be able to use the free sync ability your monitor has.

Yes if you already have a freesync monitor i would get a rx480 instead of the gtx 1060. They're similar performance the benefits of freesync are worth it.

My GTX 970 carries me to global.

for what? you dont need expensive cable you just need an hdmi cable then you are all set. a 5$ cable vs a 100$ cable will not make a difference, but if they do whats the point? they would just be a minor difference

Okay, I have a spare hdmi cable. I was just wondering (the hdmi cable is old, btw) that I wouldn't be able to use that hdmi because of it being 4k and what not.

I don't have the pc built or even have the parts yet (but I do want to game at 4k) I should have enough saved by the end of the year. Plus, I don' really want it now, its more for preparation for Mass Effect Andromeda. To that end, I can wait to see if there are any deals between now and assuming March.

if you are going to game at 4k the 1080 ti might be your best choice (though it is out yet) and it is the GPU i recommend you upgrading to later

I don't know if I'm willing to spend $800 (albeit rumored) on a single graphics card, On top of everything else that I need to purchase.
