I have a laptop, acer e442 with a amd v160 1 core processor, kinda unusable. And I want to make it usable changing processor and adding a ssd(that i already added) and 4Gb of ram. I just want to know if I update the bios and put a phenom ii P920 it will even boot? The socket is the same, but will it support the cpu?

Cheers.

Why did I study Haskell?

iirc most laptops have soldered cpus meaning you cannot change them?

My Setup :P

Spoiler

Skylake: I7-6700|MSI B150 GAMING M3|16GB GSKILL RIPJAWS V|R9 280X (WILL BE 1070)|CRUCIAL MX300 + WD BLACK 1TB

Usually just the gpu, cpu is in the propper socket, because you have the variants with differente cpus, they all have the same mobo but different cpu. I dont know if im making sence, but I think you will get it.

I understand i just thought that generally laptop cpus were soldered

I opened my laptop a couple of times, and I don't think it would be possible to change the CPU, or the GPU for that matter. They are often soldered on the motherboard
Edit : Sorry didn't read your answer, you might wanna try it, then.

New laptops i think have soldered components. But this one is old, and I can take the heatsink out and stuff, the cpu is perfectly interchangable. The thing is, will the motherboard recognize the P920?

Yours does have a socket for the CPU. Generation 4 of the S1 socket to be exact. It's just that, the V140 is second to most powerful for that socket. While the V160 might be compatible (you don't know. I don't either. Physical compatibility doesn't mean everything) I don't think the gain in performance is enough to justify the hassle of replacing it. The price ins't that bad though.

Should be possible, make sure to pick a AMD CPU with the same or atleast similar TDP (25W btw) and with the S1G4 Socket!

A AMD Turion II P560 would .... atleast have 2 cores and is way faster than the v160 .....

You should be able to find some on Ebay for 15-40 bucks.

If it would run with a Phenom II ... I duno I can't find informations about the eMachine Mobo. If you have some spare money I would just buy a Turion II P560 and maybe a  Phenom II P960 and test it if it works, than you can sell the left one again.

PS: On CPU-World someone commented that he throw that Turion in a  acer e440 so I guess that is shouldn't be to difficult ^_^

First, the laptop has the v160!

And in the first post I said I wanted the P920, it has 25w tdp and is a quad core, wayyy better performance. I hope the mobo recognizes it, although it just costs 15€... Cheap cheap

I got that you have the V160 :D

And I wanted to say that I don't know if the emachine regognize a Phenom II, because I couldn't find much informations about the emachine MOBO.

BUT I found someone on CPU-World who throwed a Turion II in another emachine so a Turion II sould work for you, too. Just in case your Phenom II doesn't work 9_9 . A Phenom would be even better.

Sorry when I miss leaded you a bit, I edited my previous post several times ... and was a bit unorganized. (I'm at work right now and have the bad mannerism to open X million tabs ... but on work I only have 1 screen)

PS: good luck btw, and post if It worked it may be informative for someone else
