Hello guys,
So I have a x5460 with a asus p5b mobo and temps of cpu are oddly high. Idle at chill tempreture(about 20 degrees) gets no lower than 41 after left for like 10 minutes. In game gets up to 95-96 on core 0 with the others trailing 2-3 degrees. Thermal compound is changed, psu has at least another 100 watts to spare. Any overclocking is impossible due to that reason. Could it be just the stock cooler not being able to do better or is the cpu bad ?

So is it a laptop or an actual Desktop? If it's laptop, you should get a fan pad that you put your laptop on

I'm pretty sure it's desktop PC, since  x5460 is using 120W ... laptops can't handle that so easy xD

Yes it is possible that stock cooler isn't doing great job, since that CPU have kinda high power usage. It's also 45nm CPU arhitecture. Try to use something like hyperevo 212, and if that doesn't help, it's possibible that something is wrong inside the CPU (between CPU and IHS).

model number could be like that

But he said cpu is  x5460. That's CPU for 771 socket and as far as I know it's only for desktop PC :)

Yeah that's where my concern is coming from, just looking to validate if it's even worth getting a good cooler, because you know the cost of the whole thing is not much.

True, but that cooler costs like 25$, so in my opinion it's worth to try it out.

You can still use it when you buy new CPU in the future.

Or just return it or sell as used to someone.

I bought one cooler like that, just for purpose of testing :)
